History and Information:

Lylburn Downing Middle School is the public middle school for the city of Lexington. The school originally opened its doors in 1927 to African-American students. Another building was added in 1949, and an addition containing a gymnasium-auditorium was added in 1959. A final addition was completed in 1981, bringing all of the school under one roof and the original building was closed. When schools in the area were integrated in 1965, Lylburn Downing Middle became part of the elementary school system. It now serves all of Lexington's sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. The other city school in Lexington, Waddell Elementary, serves all of Lexington's Kindergartners through fifth graders. Secondary students in Lexington attend Rockbridge Country High School.

School Accreditation: Lylburn Downing Middle School is fully accredited by the state of Virginia and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The school was first accredited by SACS n 1988 and has continued that accreditation since. SACS designated the Lexington City School Division as "A Super District for Quality Schools" in the 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, and 2004-05. In addition, the school made Annual Yearly Progress this year based on the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
