Our Directors

Jan Clay, co-director

Jan has been teaching elementary music in the classroom for 33 years in the Howell Public Schools and has been nominated for Teacher of the Year numerous times.  She is married to John, an elementary principal in Howell.  They have 3 children, Chris, Scott, and Emily.

Jan graduated from Eastern Michigan University with triple minors in Education, Music, and English.  During her time at Eastern, Jan traveled to Vienna and Paris with the University Choir.  She has a Master's Degree plus 30 hours in Elementary Education.  A member of the Mid-Michigan Orff Schulwerk Association for 20 years, Jan has served as secretary and workshop presenter several times.  She has been associated with church choirs her entire life and currently directs the adult and children's choirs at her church.  She loves to travel, shop, decorate, and be with her family and friends.


Diane Ives, accompanist


Diane presently is the full-time accompanist for Howell High School choir under the direction of Rod Bushey.  She teaches private piano students and also serves as pianist for the First Baptist Church of Howell where she is a member.  Diane received her Bachelor of Music degree from Michigan State University and further studied performance and accompanying at Western Illinois University.  She taught vocal music for Howell Public Schools and St. Joseph school in Howell.

Diane and her husband Ken live in Brighton where Ken is a Realtor with the MIchigan Group.  They have three grown children, all of whom love to sing.  Her daughter, Leah, was the grateful first place recipient of the LCC Vocal Scholarship in 2003. 



Carrie Jernigan, co-director

Carrie graduated magna cum laude  from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Music Education in May of 2009.   Her degree includes six years of professional voice training as well as preparation for instructing young vocalists.  She has participated in collegiate and community choirs for over ten years and had six years of  private piano instruction.   

During college, Carrie received many academic and vocal performance scholarships including Central Michigan University School of Music Grant, the Dees Vocal Performance scholarship, and the Yda Lou Schultz Elementary Music scholarship. 

Since she has graduated, she has conducted the Livingston County Chorale Children’s Choir, taught music in area public schools to all grades and ages, and has given private voice and piano lessons.
