Lavantautiset is Social Dance Society for Students. It is part of Oulu University Medical Students' Association, but the activities are open to all. We have been the home for crazy social dancing since 1997! The weekly lessons at medical faculty's old main building (Aapistie 7, hall 7A) take place during term time (with breaks for summer and Christmas holiday). Lessons take place on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and are a bargain at 2 euro (1 euro for medical students). You don't have to be a member or a student to attend, but be aware that most people there will be students. You can come alone: there is usually quite equal number of leaders and followers and partners will be rotated often enough anyway. We practice social partner dances: the traditional Finnish ones like valssi, tango, humppa, jenkka, foksi, polkka, masurkka and so called rock and swing dances (fusku, bugg, jive, lindy hop...) and even some latin stuff (rumba, cha cha, samba, salsa). You can check the dance and teacher from 'Harjoitukset'. Since the lessons start from basic every time, you can join us anytime. Each time there is also something new for the more advanced. The teaching is in Finnish but translation is no problem and a lot can be learned by watching. Teachers are non-professionals volunteers, who have been dancing for years. On occasion parties, special cources and trips are organized. |
