From the Teacher's Desk Sept 21-25
1. LA -- Well, the letters to Mr. B's class in Holland are sent! Hopefully we'll be hearing back from them soon. This week we will be finishing our Bio Books from last week. Please note that all 'squares' are due tomorrow. We will also be focusing on paragraph writing as I've noticed our skills are weak. Students will be doing numerous short writing activities on a variety of topics. Also going home towards the end of the week will be our first 'Book Talk' assignment. All book talks this year will be a 'take home' assignment with a presentation in class. In your child's agenda towards the end of the week will be a copy of the assignment, the name of their book of choice and the due date for presentations.
2. Math -- In math this week we will be continuing with our games that we have learned so far to practice our basic skills. We had a blast on Thursday with our 'human calculator' game. You'll have to ask your son/daughter about it! We will be starting Place Value up to Millions. Students are needing to know how to read, write (expanded and standard form) and round numbers up to millions.
3. Social -- Students have started their own "Islands" on Thursday. Their islands are to consist of an isthmus, peninsula, a bay and show the elevations of hills and mountains. We will be using our islands this week to introduce the concepts of elevation maps, longitude/latitude and scale.
4. Art -- Basic color wheel and Andy Warhol portraits.
5. Reward Day -- On Thursday afternoon we will be having our first reward day for the grade 5 students. They will have the choice of 2 movies and be able to bring in snacks to enjoy! This is for students who have handed in and completed ALL assignments during the past month, as well as for students that show enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards learning. One classroom will be set up for those students who do not meet this criteria and those students will need to finish any unfinished work. So far, it's looking like almost everyone will be joining us this time! Students have until Wed to complete any unfinished work. These reward days will happen on the last Thursday of each month.
6. Reminder -- Friday is our Terry Fox Run day!
