From the Teachers Desk Jan 18 - 22nd 1. LA -- Students this week will be finishing their rough copies of their children's books. Good copies will be finished for Thursday. Students have had lots of class time to complete and most should finish by the deadline. If they need more time they will need to email it to themselves on Wednesday to complete the rest at home. I will be taking them through a 'illustrators' workshop lesson Wed/Thurs so that they can begin their illustrations.
2. Math -- Students will be working with Safeway math again to find out how to calculate 15% off of their totals as well as working with ratios and air miles. There will be a quiz on Monday next week focusing on, how to find the total cost, discounts, and unit price.
3. Social -- Students got their test marks back from their quiz, so please ask your son or daughter how they did! Those that needed to write later as they weren't here last Friday will get theirs back as soon as I get them marked. For the most part I was very pleased with the marks as the class average was 81%! Way to go guys! Some students will obviously need to study more and take even their quizzes a bit more seriously. We will be going over the quizzes this week and starting Chapter 3 - The Great Lake Lowland region.
4. Art - Students will be creating their own Picasso paintings. We will start painting this week!
Reminders:
1. Gymnastic equipment is still here!
2. Hot lunch on Tuesday Jan 19th
3. All grade 5 teachers will be away Jan 20th PM only. Please talk with your son/daughter about respect when a sub is in.
4. Reward Day on Thursday PM -- students will need to bring a snack for themselves if they choose too. Those students with outstanding assignments, not showing respect to their school, subs, or others will not be participating in reward day and will have alternate work to do. For the next ones in Feb. and on -- I will also be including good grades on quizzes and or showing improvement. I'm starting to see some students slipping in their effort and this will need to pick up. I'm hoping by tying that to reward day that they will do so.
5. Feb 4th. All grade 5's from all 3 schools on the westside will be coming to Nicholas Sheran for an Olympic Theme day. Here students will have the opportunity to choose if they would like to go swimming or skating. There will also be events in the gym that pertain to the Olympic games! Should be a great way to meet their new friends heading into middle school next year! Go Canada GO!
6. Book talks have been changed from Jan 28th, to Feb, 5th. Remind students that participating in the round circle sharing is a must, however students are not able to EAT if they don't COMPLETE!
7. Our class has a website! Here you will be able to find all of our "From the Teachers Desk" emails, as well as other information about events in our room! http://sites.google.com/site/lauriechinn/
Have a good week,
