The History of the Late Nite program at Binghamton University

The program we have today has been years in the making…

Early Stages:
The idea initially began in what was then the Office of Campus Activities and Orientation in 1987. However, it was not until the late 1990’s that this idea really started to get off the ground. Assistant Director Bill Kroll pioneered late night programming at Binghamton by researching what other schools were doing and talking with our students to see if those ideas would work here. The outcome of all of this work was Late Nite Binghamton, a program who’s goal was to:
  • enhance and build student life – not as a prevention – but as a positive building opportunity to give students a chance to interact socially, express themselves through their talent, channel their energies, and to engage in recreational and fun activities
  • to build community and identity with the University, to make being at Binghamton at night the place to be, and the ok thing – if not the cool thing – to do
  • to work with student groups to enhance their programs, and to expose students to different cultures and perspectives, and the build an environment of understanding and acceptance
  • to create a viable, non-judgmental, social environment – not an alternative – but a primary environment.

A Program Is Born:
In order to build Late Nite Binghamton, resources were needed! It began with Student Association funding (which then led to the Campus Life Fee), and bringing the University on board with the support of the Vice Presidents and various departments. The very first Late Nite Binghamton took place on March 29-30, 2001.
This pilot program started with 6 weekend programs during the Spring 2001 semester, open gym, and Late Nite during New Student Orientation in the Summer of 2001. Late Nite came back in full swing in Fall 2001 starting on Welcome Back Weekend.

Why It Worked:
A partnership between administrators and students is the key to Late Nite’s success. The budget committee that originally oversaw the funding of Late Nite was composed of 3 administrators and 5 students:
  • Assistant Vice President of Student Life (Chair)
  • Director of Campus Activities and Orientation
  • Assistant Controller
  • Late Nite Graduate Student
  • Late Nite Undergraduate Student
  • Student Association President
  • Student Association Vice President of Finance
  • Student Association Vice President for University Programming
  • Assistant Director of Campus Activities & Orientation (non-voting)

The programming committee included administrators, graduate students, Student Association representatives, off-campus representatives, undergraduate entertainment coordinators, and any student with an idea!

Late Nite Binghamton Programming Today:
Late Nite has certainly evolved over the last 8 years, and continues to with each academic year. Though from the beginning, students have been heavily involved in Late Nite programming. A board of 6 specific undergraduate student programming chairs started in Fall 2005. Now, the programming board includes: a Program Coordinator (or the Associate Director of Campus Activities), graduate assistants, and various undergraduate chairs (Undergrounds, Crafts, Movies, Games & Sports, Public Access, Promotions, Graphic Design, and Distribution).

What Has Been Produced:
8 years of quality programming!!
Late Nite “staples”…
Then: free drinks and discounted food, open gym, live music, free movies, bowling, billards, change of atmosphere.
Now: all of the above, free food, crafts, games/tournaments, comedy shows, and novelty acts.

*Fun Fact!... Now popular singer-songwriter Regina Spektor performed at Late Nite in December 2002, before she was signed to a recording contract.
