This page provides guidelines to applicants on what are considered as acceptable professional development activities. Please read this in conjunction with the PDS Activity Record Form. Acceptable activities and their respective points assigned are approved and revised by the PDS Board. Revisions on recognized activities will be updated in this page and in the announcement page. Members may submit nomination for activities to be recognized to the PDS Board for consideration though they should consider carefully the principles and the purpose behind the PDS. See FAQ for common queries and examples.
Training courses and workshops - A1-Training (ET1 - ET12)
1.1 LIS courses should be conducted by qualified professionals with library and information science qualifications or by library science educators. Courses on related areas to LIS including information technology, intellectual property, educational and learning development and management must be conducted by practitioners or educators qualified in their respective fields.
1.2 Participation in general leadership courses and programmes are also admissable [Oct 09]
1.3 Courses should be organized or jointly organized by recognized institutions and organizations in Singapore or overseas. These include the Library Association of Singapore, other recognized national or state library and information associations, recognized libraries, reputable educational institutions, recognized training companies and library and information services vendors.
1.4 In-house training courses to develop and upgrade professional skills and knowledge in library and information work organized by the applicant’s library are acceptable activities. However on-the-job and orientation training to equip staff to perform his/her job cannot be included.
1.5 Training on systems, databases, library resources and services used by the applicant's library and conducted by vendors are acceptable for inclusion in this category. They can also be used in the Industry knowledge Development (ID) category. Other product briefings and demonstrations by vendors should be entered in the Industry Knowledge Development (Part B) category.
1.6 E-learning courses, online and web conferences must be related to LIS or allied disciplines. They should have a cumulated duration of at least 2 hours to complete.
1.7 Applicants whose work involved responsibilities for subject librarianship or specific industry information work may also add points from attending conferences and seminars on the subject area or industry sector.
1.8 Internship programmes should be offered by recognized libraries here and abroad.
1.9 Applicants who are involved in more than one activity in the same event (e.g. as a participant of the conference as well as Chair of a session at the conference) can only select one activity for submission.
Professional activities – A2 - Professional activities (EP1 - EP7)
2.1 Professional activities refer to those organized by LAS and its various committees and sub-committees.
2.2 To earn points from participation in committees, applicants must fulfill the attendance requirement of their committees or at least 4 meetings per year or equivalent.
2.3 Points are also awarded (EP3) for participation in ad-hoc committees lasting less than 1 year, e.g. in conference organizing committees, project committees, etc. The duration of the ad-hoc committee should be at least 3 months.
2.4 Individuals who carry out project work or ad-hoc profession-related assignments (e.g. as Internal Auditor) initiated by the LAS Council can claim points in this category.
2.5 Individuals who conduct information sharing sessions on their experience and particpation in LIS conferences and other professional activities in formal settings for at least 45 minutes can claim points in this category [Oct 09].
Authorship – A3-Authorship (EA1 - EA14)
3.1 For conference papers and journal articles jointly written by more than 2 authors, the total points allocated to main author and joint author in that category shall be shared equally among the total number of authors (regardless of position of authorship).
3.2 For other publications and activities listed in the section “Authorship”, joint authors or presenters shall share the points equally.
3.3 To qualify for EA10 and EA11, an article must be published in journals, magazines, newsletter or any serial publications in print or in an official website or blog of a recognized library or organization. Applicants can record more than one article of the required length in their submission.
3.4 In lieu of article length, applicants who contribute 5 or more short articles (200 words each) in a newsletter, blog or official publication is deemed to have fulfilled this condition. Similarly for points awarded to more than 2,000 word length articles.
3.5 An article written for conference and later published in journal, will be entered only once in either category EA1-EA4, or EA8 – EA9.
Professional reading and self-study – A4 - (ER1 - ER4)
4.1 To earn points for engagement in self study, applicants must show one or more of the following forms of evidence:
(i) Submission of a log of professional reading done during the qualifying period and certified by applicant’s supervisor. The log should contain at least 24 items per year
(ii) Submission of bibliographic essays or reviews (should be at least 24 items) for publication in the bulletins and journals of LAS. Work must be accepted for publication
(iii) Posting in personal weblog showing substantial number of entries (should be at least 10 per year) relating to reading of professional literature
(iv) Participation in reading circles or study group registered with LAS (attendance at least 4 times a year)
(v) Other evidence acceptable to the PDS Board. The Board shall post their decision on other acceptable evidence in the LAS website.
4.2 All self-study activities shall attract the fixed number of points at 100 points per year.
4.3 Some suggestions for reading circles and study groups are given in Reading Groups. Members may also submit suggestions to record their self or group development activities for consideration by the PDS Committee.
Industry knowledge development activities. ID1 - ID5
5.1 Generally, any activities that enable a participant to keep updated on developments in the profession and the industry (as opposed to skills and expertise development) are considered as industry knowledge development activities.
5.2 Examples of activities in item (ID-1) are talks by local or visiting professionals, discussion forums and special groups’ meetings organized by LAS or established institutions and libraries. All such activities should be opened to all LAS members.
5.3 Applicants may also earn the allocated points in (ID-1) for participation in business meetings at invitation of LAS council and committees and attendance at AGM.
5.4 Applicants will not be assigned points for activities that they organize or participate in as part of their job operational requirement.
Personal development activities PD1 - PD2
6.1 Applicants may use extra points earned in the Industry knowledge development activities for tallying in the Personal development activities group.
