Our Program

Las Manos de Christine works with other NGOs who educate children. We provide professional teachers, quality resources, and tailored programs. We are also beginning to research modifying existing methodology and resources to help teach English to impoverished kids. For information on why we believe in education to fight poverty, why we think English is useful for disadvantaged children, and why we think we are the right group to provide it, please see here.

Our First Education Partner: Camino Seguro (Safe Passage)

Camino Seguro was founded in 1999 by the late Hanley Denning to provide food, medical care, and education to the children living in the municipal dump in Zone 3 of Guatemala City. Currently, Camino Seguro gives extra schooling, nutrition, medical care, and sometimes even housing to over 500 children. For more details on Camino Seguro please refer to its site.

Las Manos' first project was to introduce an English program for First and Second grades into the existing curriculum of the Camino Seguro School. Classes started in January 2008, and are ongoing. The children are making great progress, and we will post some of their results soon. Las Manos also provides support to the pre-existing English program for older children with teacher training and administrative support.

Las Manos English Program: Teachers

Las Manos employs native speaking, experienced, passionate teachers from all over the world. We only select teachers who are able to make long term commitments to this project and to the children they teach. Because of these requirements, Las Manos teachers are paid professionals rather than volunteers. Volunteers do a fantastic job in many charities, but the reality is that few can afford to stay for a long time, and that few are fully qualified to teach. The children we work with typically come from educationally poor backgrounds and have special requirements from their teachers. Long term, qualified and experienced teachers are best able to help with the progress of such children and to modify their style and the resources available to best fit the children’s needs. If you are a teacher who fits these criteria and would like to work with Las Manos on our current or future projects, please see our How to Help page.

Las Manos English Program: Resources

Las Manos teachers use a combination of the “English Time” and “Headway” English programs in their classes. Both of these renowned systems are produced by the Oxford University Press. “English Time” is designed for younger students and features many colorful and humorous illustrations. “Headway” is designed for older students and focuses on grammar, vocabulary and communicating in typical situations. Both programs use a variety of exercises and media to teach speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills. A library of supplemental resources is also available to Las Manos teachers.

Las Manos English Program: Training and Administration Support

For each education partner, Las Manos designs a specialized English program to fit their needs and the needs of their children. The partner provides the classrooms and the students, and Las Manos provides a syllabus, English teachers, and specialized resources. The teachers are delivered by bus directly to each school by Las Manos for each lesson. As well as this direct assistance, Las Manos offers administrative advice and teacher training courses and seminars by language acquisition experts.
