Welcome to the website of Las Manos de Christine...

In 2007, we, a group of education professionals, formed the NGO Las Manos de Christine (Hands of Christine) to test a new idea: bringing a private sector level of English education to impoverished children. To do this we provide English programs, quality resources, and long-term professional teachers to non-profits that educate children.

Instruction in English might not seem the most useful thing you could give to a disadvantaged child, but we believe that the best way to fight poverty in the long term is through education, particularly education in a marketable skill such as English. Speaking English gives access to higher education, scholarships, business opportunities, and to stable and well-paying jobs in the tourism and service industries. Learning it will eventually allow these children the chance to support themselves and their families rather than to spend their lives relying on charity.

The fundraising event in Las Cruces was a great success...

The Hand family would like to thank everyone in Las Cruces for your kind donations. We could not have done this without you, thank you.

A word from Earth Lodge

Las Manos de Christine will be beginning a new project in the El Hato School in the 2010 school year.

El Hato is a small village about 20 minutes outside of Antigua.  This public school has about 215 kids, and we expect more for next year.  The school is funded by the Guatemalan government, but, for the past few years, Earth Lodge has been raising money to sponsor the children to go to school. Paying for the school supplies of the children can be a crippling expense for many of the families in El Hato.  For the past 3 years that we have been fund raising for the school, we have seen an increase in the number of children attending school due to the fact that the sponsorship funds cover the cost of all school supplies.  This past school year, the $45 US paid by sponsors also paid for all the school children to go on the first ever field trip to the Guatemala City Zoo and Kid's Museum.

We are very excited to be partnering with Las Manos for the next school year and know that their support will help to further the quality of education in this village.  Please donate to this cause if you are able; every little bit helps!!
