In 2007, we, a group of education professionals, formed the NGO Las Manos de Christine (Hands of Christine) to test a new idea: bringing a private sector level of English education to impoverished children. To do this we provide English programs, quality resources, and long-term professional teachers to non-profits that educate children. Instruction in English might not seem the most useful thing you could give to a disadvantaged child, but we believe that the best way to fight poverty in the long term is through education, particularly education in a marketable skill such as English. Speaking English gives access to higher education, scholarships, business opportunities, and to stable and well-paying jobs in the tourism and service industries. Learning it will eventually allow these children the chance to support themselves and their families rather than to spend their lives relying on charity.
El Hato is a small village about 20 minutes outside of Antigua. This public school has about 215 kids, and we expect more for next year. The school is funded by the Guatemalan government, but, for the past few years, Earth Lodge has been raising money to sponsor the children to go to school.
