Story

My name is Ronnie Matthews; I was born in San Mateo raised in East Palo Alto and attended high school at Carlmont in Belmont. I did not return after eleventh grade and went on to pursue a job in the union construction field I returned to school to obtain my G.E.D. diploma after working in construction for over twenty years and working for many different companies, learning how different companies did business. I have always wanted to run my own business. I entered the art design field through construction; originally a concrete cutter, I attended the World of Concrete conference and learned a great deal – learning about the FX2436 laser etcher, the machine I use to create all of my artwork, sparked my interest in creating laser art as well as my entrepreneurial instincts.

At the time I started my business, I had no idea what it took to run one, since it was much different from the work I had done in my lifetime. Then I heard about Start Up, a community-based training program for local residents that were looking to become entrepreneurs backed by resources, workshops, counseling and business school volunteers -- a great support system. I enrolled in Start Up’s business training program and learned what it took to be a business owner and I continue to revert to the program, one day hoping to be able to be part of Start Up’s support for those coming behind me. After originally starting my new and unique business, I was not able work it on a full time level while still working construction; after a work injury and a near fatal motorcycle accident, it is finally the time that I am able pursue my business full time.
