Sacraments

Every year our Pastorate has many individuals who receive one of the Catholic sacraments for the first time.  Please visit any of the headings below that pertain your Sacrament of interest (Marriage, Baptism, Confirmation1st Eucharist, 1st Reconciliation, R.C.I.A.  If we can be of assistance helping you receive any of the sacraments, feel free to call any of our staff members.

When you have decided on the date you would like to be married, call Fr. Burkle at 563-853-3369 or 563-870-4041 and schedule your date if available. Fr. Burkle will schedule a pre-nuptial session with you. After meeting with Fr. Burkle, call Cindy or Jim at 563-870-4428 and set a date to have your marriage preparation session. Once you have completed this session, you will meet with Fr. Burkle to discuss your FOCCUS survey. After this, you will meet with one of our Priests who will help you prepare for "the big day".

Once you have become engaged and called to reserve your wedding date, you are free to sign up for a PreCana weekend, an Engaged Encounter weekend or wait and receive instruction from a Sponsor Couple. The Archdiocese' website has details about the weekends.

Click here for a calendar of Archdiocese events (pdf file which includes pre-marriage sessions).

Once you are ready to start planning your wedding celebration, you have two choices. If you are planning the full Mass with Communion, go to our Mass planning page to help you get started. If your celebration is without Communion, go to our Celebration planning page. When you have everything planned, fill out the selections and submit.

If you are interested in having your child Baptized, please contact Jim or Cindy at 563-870-4428.  Information will be taken for the official church records, a time for your Baptism class will be decided, and a weekend Mass for your Baptism will be set.

If you have had a child baptized in the past 3 years, you will not need a class.  However, you still need to call Cindy or Jim to fill out the church records and set a time for your Baptism.

Confirmation

Our Pastorate's Confirmation program is open to all students in grade 10.  Completion of the 9th grade religious education program is required.

Confirmation candidates who attended La Salle's religious education 9th grade classes last year or were enrolled at Beckman or Wahlert High School should receive a letter regarding the confirmation program.  The first session will be Sunday, September 13, beginning with the 8:30 Mass at Sherrill, followed by registration and class from 9:30-11:30 for all candidates and their parents.  If you were not in a La Salle program last year and are eligible to be confirmed or for any reason do not get a letter, please call Br. Stephen (563-580-6930).

All 9th grade students who are not enrolled in a Catholic school should be in the 9th grade religious education class.  There are two options: Sunday morning at Rickardsville and Wednesday evening at Sherrill.  Sunday morning sessions began last Sunday.  The first Wednesday session is September 9th, 6:45 p.m. at Sherrill.  Anyone who plans to attend on Sunday mornings, but did not make last Sunday's session, please come to Sherrill Wednesday, September 9th, for your first session.  You can return to Sunday morning after that.  A reminder that 9th grade religious education class is required to be eligible for Confirmation next year.  Thank you.

The cost for Confirmation is $40.00.

Remaining Confirmation sessions are as follows:

Sunday, November 8th, 8:30 a.m. Mass; 9:30 a.m. session at Rickardsville.

Confirmation Candidates looking for community service hours are welcome to work at the Luxemburg Oktoberfest Picnic.  Please contact Joann Langel at 853-4010.

1st Eucharist

First Communion is usually received in our Pastorate when a child is in the second grade.  Students who attend Religious Education classes receive some instruction during class.  Students who are part of a Catholic School receive some instruction during the school day.

The majority of the instruction for the Eucharist is the responsibility of the parent.  A meeting for parents is conducted in January where materials are handed out and discussed.  Parents then teach their child.  The child's First Communion is the first weekend in May at the usually scheduled Mass times.

The cost for the combined Reconciliation and Communion program is $28.00.  New materials must be purchased each year as the materials are to be written in and activities assembled.

Letters will be sent to all families with a registered second grader informing them of the meeting dates and other important information.

If a child wishes to make his/her first Reconciliation and first Communion in the second grade, s/he must have attended religious education classes in the first grade and be able to verify that instruction took place.  If a child moves into the Pastorate, religious education records must be provided verifying that the student has satisfactorily completed first grade religious education instruction.  Also, a record of Baptism must be provided for all students who were not baptized at one of the churches in the Pastorate.

There will be a meeting for all parents of second grade students on Wednesday, Sept. 23, Wednesday, Jan. 27, and Thursday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. at Rickardsville.  The September and January meetings deal with First Reconciliation and Communion.  The April meeting is the rehearsal for First Communion.  Parents are expected to attend all meetings in order to have their child receive the sacraments on the scheduled dates.

First Reconciliation is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 29, at 2:00 p.m. at Balltown.
First Communion is the weekend of May1 and May 2.
