Loose Cannons Morris Women
Sister Side of the Infamous Loose Women
The Loose Women were rediscovered by Gordon Newton in 1983 when he appealed, "Loose Women Required for A Respectable Pastime". Instead of being approached by the vice squad & people of ill repute, surprisingly a number of seemingly sensible women expressed an interest. 25 years later, his daughter Elaine, decided that Portsmouth was sadly lacking a bunch of reprobate women - and with Portsmouth being a naval city, it seemed only right to name the team The Loose Cannons, having been cast from the same mould as The Loose Women. (I'm going to see how many 'cannon/seafaring' puns I can squeeze into this page!!)
The Loose Cannons dance our own interpretation of Border Morris, which is a 'loose', loud, stompy style of dancing. The only hankies you'll find in this team will be to mop our sweating brows....or occasionally to wipe the blood from our bleeding knuckles!
The reputation of the Loose Women and Loose Cannons goes before us. This is of a raucous & unruly pack of beer swilling or rum-swigging females, who enjoy nothing better than relaxing in the sun, sipping on a cool drink, Oh...and doing some dancing now & again. We are laid back to the point of unconsciousness.
The social aspect is very important to the side & sometimes the Morris Dancing may seem somewhat of a sideline. But when we do dance, we really dance!!!
When we're not dancing out and confusing members of the public, who still think women 'don't do' morris dancing, we practice at a secret location on the fair Isle of Portsmouth (yes, it is an island).
If you fancy having a go, I'm currently press-ganging innocent women. We have started our practice season, but always welcome new members. We'll be ready to bombard the public with our dancing prowess in Summer 2009! We are looking for female dancers (age or ability not an issue), and male or female musicians.
If you'd like to see what we're all about, have a look at the Loose Women website www.loosewomen.org.uk
