ABOUT US
Lakeland Signers was founded in 1979 as a student club at Lakeland Community College. As most student clubs, it was "on again/off again" for many years, but always with the strong support of its advisor and the ASL Faculty. Currently we are one of the most active clubs on our campus with a strong membership base.  The Lakelander calls us "one of the oldest and most prestigious student organizations at Lakeland".

We hold a monthly meeting (with the exception of January, May, August and December due to school scheduling conflicts). Since 2003, we have been the only club on campus to hold meetings and events throughout the summer.

In 2005, we held our first Deaf Awareness Days (co-sponsored between the Lakeland Signers and the Lakeland ASL Department).  The 20-hour event, held over two days, is held annually in the Spring.  Tables feature information on Deaf Culture/Deaf History, technology for the Deaf, Deaf Resources and much more.  As part of Deaf Awareness Days, we have hosted Sorenson Video Relay, Regional Infant Hearing Program, Ohio Association of the Deaf and Cleveland Signstage.

We have helped to make sign language, as well as the ASL department, more visible throughout the college campus.  In 2006, Lakeland Signers hired a professional interpreter to interpret a performance by a nationally-known comedian; and in 2007, we brought in Keith Wann to perform for the community and student body.

In 2010, we hosted our first Dingo Night.  Being our first one, we had some kinks to work out, but we drew a crowd of over 100 people, many of whom were Deaf, which allowed our ASL students an opportunity to practice their sign skill with a large group of people.  As part of our Dingo night, we also held a very successful food drive for the ASL Advocates' Food Bank.

In 2011, we assisted the ASL Department in hosting an ASL Film ("Black Sand").  Thanks to all the faculty that sold tickets, the movie was a complete sellout.

MISSION STATEMENT
Lakeland Signers is one of many student organizations at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio (Lake County).  The purpose of Lakeland Signers is to provide skill building, networking, educational and outreach opportunities to any Lakeland student in good standing who is interested in American Sign Language and the Deaf community in Lake County; and to provide social interaction opportunities to both ASL students and Deaf students at Lakeland Community College and members of the Deaf community.

According to The Lakelander (3/31/2010), "The Lakeland Signers Club is one of the oldest and most prestigious student organizations at Lakeland."  Each year we strive to continue to make our current members, former members and founders proud!

CURRENT EVENTS
At all of our events we welcome students from other schools as well.  The diversity among the students as well as the Deaf community allows our students to see some different signs and signing styles that are used between different schools, teachers or dialects.

For upcoming events, go to www.ohioaslclubs.org.

SILENT SUPPER
The second Saturday of each month is "Mentor Silent Supper", starting at 4pm at the Mentor Cici's.  This event also serves as a monthly fundraising event for the Lakeland Signers Club.  By informing the cashier (before they ring you up), that you are are there for Silent Supper, a portion of your bill will be donated to our club.  Click HERE to download a "reminder" for you to bring in to the restaurant.  Click HERE to download a flyer to share, post or remind you, including dates of the upcoming Silent Suppers.
