Lake Fayetteville


Lake Fayetteville (08/20/2011) -- Pediastrum simplex.
Found in lakes and ponds and free-flowing rivers that are nutrient rich.  Habitat group P (shallow, enriched lakes, ponds, and rivers) in Reynolds (2006) -- sensitive to settling into low light.  If present in large numbers, can cause taste and odor problems in drinking waters.


Lake Fayetteville (08/20/2011) -- Ceratium hirundinella. Common in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs. Habitat group Lm (summer epilimnia in eutrophic lakes) in Reynolds (2006) -- tolerant to very low C and stratification; sensitive to flushing and low total light.

Extremely common and known worldwide forming dense blooms in eutrophic waters.  Many strains are toxic.  If present in large numbers, can cause taste and odor problems in drinking waters and can cause filter clogging. Habitat group Lm (summer epilimnia in eutrophic lakes) in Reynolds (2006) -- tolerant to very low C and stratification; sensitive to flushing and low total light.

Common in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs often forming dense mat-forming blooms, forming toxins.  Habitat group H1 (dinitrogen-fixing nostocaleans) in Reynolds (2006) -- tolerant to low nitrogen, low carbon; sensitive to mixing, poor light, low phosphorus.

Some form surface blooms and some are recorded as toxic.  Habitat group Sn (warm mixed layers) in Reynolds (2006) -- tolerant to light deficiency; sensitive to flushing.  If present in large numbers, can cause taste and odor problems in drinking waters and can cause filter clogging. Presence considered to be a good indicator of mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions.
