Exercise to Fight Parkinson’s Symptoms

Ben's recent interest in Parkinson's Disease, stems from a history of investing in people and their well-being.  In the past as a manager for The Hampton's Fitness Center, he shadowed and was mentored by HealthSouth Physical Therapy for nearly 6 years.  It was during this time that he developed the patience and know-how to create and implement programming for any population.  Ben currently trains 5 people with Parkinson's each week one-on-one.  He has been certified as a Parkinson's Fitness instructor, by David Zid BA, ACE, APG Certified Personal and Functional fitness trainer and Author of "Delay the Disease-Exercise and Parkinson's Disease."  He was taught evidenced-based concepts and methodology for planning and implementing a community based Parkinson's-specific exercise program.

"One could argue the more important objective research is moving towards the development of drugs that are neuroprotective-medications that me delay or reverse the disease's progression.

We believe that exercise is likely such a 'drug'."

Michael J. Zigmond, PH.D., professor of neurology at the Pittsburgh Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Comments from the DTD Class Participants in Columbus, Ohio

"My arm swing is returning and I no longer shuffle.  I can sit and stand with ease now.  My mental outlook has improved and I feel I am taking control of my illness."

"Exercise has kept my upper body flexible, so it is easier to dress myself and drive.  Some days I don't think I can make it too exercise class.  But after the hour is over, I feel very good.  The comfort takes me through the weekend."

"It might be overly dramatic to say exercise for Parkinson's saved my life, but it certainly saved my quality of life."
