Long Island Sound is an estuary near the most densely populated region of the United States. This beautiful body of water connects the northern side of Long Island New York and Connecticut's shoreline. More than 8 million people call Long Island Sound home. Due to this staggering population, the sound is heavily utilized by humans.This much human activity can cause devistating effects and, thus,impact  the natural cycles of the sea floor and the entire watershed . The sea floor comprises a variety of habitats that support a large commercial and recreational fishery. It can also be a dumping ground for wastes and contaminants produced from sources such as wastewater treatment plants, urban runoff, riverine input, and airborne transport. Long Island Sound is 21 miles wideand 110 miles long. The average depth of the sound is 65 feet (Sound Facts Peg Van Patten page 3). Estuaries such as Long Island Sound are among the most valuable ecosystems in the world! University of Connecticut economist Marilyn Altobello added up the value of the Sound to be at about $5.5 billion.
