(Summer 2000 to Spring 2001)    Geographic Information Systems/Computer Technician Internship Position for Ball State University Facilities Planning and Management-Landscape Services.

  • Participated with a team of students and professionals that were chosen to conduct the Muncie Urban Forestry and Ball State University sponsored comprehensive tree Inventory. The team successfully inventoried over 20,000 individual trees and entered them into a comprehensive GIS database that is used by Ball State University and the City of Muncie.

I helped maintain and integrate the BSU Inventory Database into the daily routine of landscape services personnel by working with supervision to create work orders and methods of operations and maintenance of the database.

Volunteer and Community Service Experience

Delaware County Emergency Management. 2001-present

Serves as primary Emergency Support Function 5 (ESF-5) Information & Planning.

Provides Information assimilation, map generation, status board generation and editing, and volunteer coordination during emergencies in the community. Utilizes GIS, GPS, and databases for data collection, as well as web-based Emergency Operations Applications for Information Delivery. Developed “Mobile Mapping” setup for self sufficient and efficient field data collection, storage, and printing for field disaster response. Provided support for large industrial fire in 2003, tornado damage assessment, 100 year flood event mapping and assessment for FEMA, severe ice storm, blizzard response, recovery & damage assessment, and hazardous material incidents.

Muncie-Delaware Clean & Beautiful.  2001-2006 active board member, 2004-2005 President elect.

A community non-for-profit organization dedicated to the beautification and aesthetic improvement of Muncie and Delaware County. Designed and installed several large traffic island landscaping projects. Supports several large semi-annual neighborhood clean-up efforts, and selects individuals and businesses for awards due to their commitment to beautification and revitalization of our community. Also provided disaster-related relief to disadvantaged/disabled citizens for debris clean up and assistance. Maintains organization’s website.

White River Watershed Project

2001-Present. Steering Committee Member, GIS Subcommittee Chairperson.

Multiple EPA Section 319 Grants awarded to the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The grant funds a full time coordinator, on-going water quality testing, GIS land use analysis, county-wide outreach and education efforts, as well as inter-local government agency coordination. This project has fostered a University-Community relationship that is unparalleled in recent years.

Started with the project as a part of DMMPC outreach as in-kind support pledge. Joined the Project’s Steering committee and volunteered to head the GIS sub-committee. Provided new GIS data layers as well as spatial analysis and cartographic map generation for meetings, publications and management plans. Designed and maintained the project’s website that included all documents, analysis and maps generated for the project. Continued with project in full capacity as a volunteer long after in-kind pledge was depleted.

Currently continuing as Project Phase 2 Steering committee member, and providing guidance for GIS portion of project, as well a website design & maintenance.

Muncie Urban Forestry Board

Ex-Officio Board Member 2001-present

Worked to help the Muncie Urban Forester maintain the GIS database of Muncie streetand park trees, as well as the development of a comprehensive city forest management plan.

Managed 2 IDNR grants to update the city-wide GIS tree inventory, as well as secure local matching funds to purchase field GPS hardware to allow the urban forester to update the inventory.

Created and maintains the MunceiUrbanForestry.org website.

Muncie Brownfields Project Board

Provides GIS services to the Muncie Brownfields project, including information and planning for grant proposals, initial field assessments and technical assistance.

Delaware-Muncie Economic Development Board

2005-present

Serves the Delaware-Muncie Economic Development Alliance with all its geo-spatial needs including initial site assessment and evaluation, as well as advanced cartographic map generation of selected sites for potential company assessment.Designed and maintains the Economic Development Map Portal which includes detailed interactive maps of all Delaware County Industrial parks and developments.

White River “Restore the River” tree planting project

Worked with a team to coordinate the largest volunteer-based tree planting along the White River in Muncie’s history. The team was able to plant over 460 trees below the levee in order to reduce erosion, maintenance costs, improve the natural aesthetics of the area as well as provide habitat for riparian flora and fauna. Through volunteers, grant monies from public and private sources, and local match and in-kind services, the cost to the community was greatly reduced.

Community Green Map Coordinator

2002-present

The Green Map Project is an international organization dedicated to highlighting and promoting sustainable activities through community based maps. A small group of interested people came together and developed a list of sustainable and environmentally forward thinking businesses, organizations and places in the community. A map was created compiling and categorizing the locations. Several local businesses have large printed green maps displays and a printed pocket map will be distributed later this summer. There is an online virtual green map that mirrors the printed versions.
