About a Woman

What is it
about a woman,
that makes her give up
everything,
just to satisfy
the so-called “biological clock?”
What instinct,
pushes her to change her name,
either quit or sidetrack her career,
so she can raise children?
Why does almost every woman
have a burning desire
to perpetuate our species,
even though doing so
would eventually lead
to overpopulation
and misery?
Even those of us
who don’t really want children,
or who mentally or physically
cannot take care of a child,
at some point become overwhelmed
with the need to reproduce.
Our bodies betray us.
Even with all our protections,
our wiley bodies
find a way to distract our minds,
and trick them
into allowing the very thing
that we were so adamant against.
Our priorities shift,
we lose our sense of who we are,
and who we want
to become.
All our attention,
becomes focused on creating and raising
a tiny, helpless being.
Then,
when our creation
ventures out into the world,
we are left wondering
who we are,
and what our purpose is now.
