Philosophy of Education

I consider myself to be a guide in the classroom, rather than a teacher.  I like to compare being a teacher to being a river guide. In general, the river guide will always talk with her raft mates about water and river safety; teach them the basic skills of river rafting; and point out the osprey nests and the floodwater marks on the narrow cliffs as they paddle swiftly by.  However, every river trip is unique for a river guide; the river conditions, weather conditions, and the people who fill her raft will always be different for each trip.  She needs to be flexible and accommodating on every trip; always expecting the unexpected.  The classroom environment is much like the raft on the river, where like the river guide, I must take note to always cover the necessities and basics; but allow flexibility in my lessons and instruction to accommodate conditions and students that will constantly be changing.  It is my goal as a teacher, to provide rich, diverse, and meaningful experiences and opportunities in the classroom to nurture, develop and expand the students’ knowledge, skills, and interest.
