Canaries shot down in the Valley

posted 19 Mar 2012 10:17 by Mens Competition Secretary   [ updated 23 Apr 2012 09:26 ]

In the first round of the Kent Trophy foursomes match held at Cray Valley GC a team of Kent and Surrey warriors fought bravely but went down 3-2 to the above, the team consisting of Peer Blakeley and Mike Austin, Bob Hucks and Bob Smith, Geoff Reade and Matt Bashford, Dave Williams and Eric Walters, Lawrence Geary and Nigel Summerfield.

All the matches took part in friendly rivalry as we were warmly welcomed and shown every courtesy, each game was closely contested and the home teams local knowledge gave them the edge in two of the first four games and with our two wins going to the final hole it was then a tense wait until the last result came in, and as the result shows it did not go our way.

I would like to wish Cray Valley all the best in the next round and my team a hearty well done.

Lady Captains charity for 2012

posted 6 Mar 2012 09:24 by KSGC Ladies Section Webmaster

Hello, not all KSGC members maybe aware of my choice of charity for this year, it is Diabetes UK. I chose this charity because Brian, my husband, had diabetes for 55 years. We were together for 45 of those years and despite Brian sticking strictly to his diet we had to cope with some unpleasant side effects of the disease. There are two main types of diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 controlled either by diet, tablets or insulin. Insulin became available in 1921 and was and still is, used to help control blood sugar levels. It is essential to eat a healthy diet to help prevent serious long-term complications. Awareness and treatment has improved tremendously over the years and I hope that however much I can raise with your support during this year, that it it will help towards improvements in treatment and maybe even a cure one day!

Amongst my fund raising events, I will be holding an "afternoon tea" in my garden on Sunday 24th June, there will also be an open event in conjunction with my co captain Geoff Reade. And Ladies please don’t forget if you visit the left hand bunker on the 7th hole or the pond in front of the 9th I should be very grateful of a small donation! Gents you are welcome to contribute too! It is proving to be quite a busy time as Captain but so far I am enjoying the challenge. Now that Spring is just around the corner Happy Golfing to you all!

Best Wishes, Kathy Stearn

Hever v Kent & Surrey match

posted 27 Feb 2012 10:17 by Members KSGC   [ updated 28 Feb 2012 00:00 ]

The game, five a side, finished two and half each. Michael  Dean got us off to a good start winning his match 6 -5 Dave Grant grinding a half after sinking a 26ft putt on the 17th to go down the last all square. No thanks to the captain who was third off crashed 6-5 followed by Matt Bashford who lost 5-3. Nigel Summerfield grinded a good win 2-1  So being all square Nigel being the last match had to play the sudden death play off. After five holes both players were one over Nigel hit his tee shot behind a big oak his partner hit right. His partner pulled his second shot left of the green Nigel hit hit shot over the tree finishing just short of the green.  His partner caught his chip thick and finished just short of the green Nigel chipped on with the ball rolling eight feet passed the pin His partner putted up to roll just passed the hole only with Nigel to sink his putt coming back for Kent & Surrey to seal a very good win.

Not many clubs come away from Hever with a win.  So we  hope for a good draw to go forward in the competition. Will keep you informed of the progress.

Geoff Reade has now been appointed as Mens 7 Day Captain and joins Kathy Stearn (Lady Captain), Peter Medlock (RGs Captain) and Rob Wild (5 Day Mens' Captain) as the core of the 19th Club Committee.  The 19th club committee represents members interests and works together with the management to improve the members golfing and social experience at the club. 2012 promises to be an exciting time at Kent & Surrey with the new owners David and Richard of Design Golf already working hard to improve many different areas of the club.

Members from all sections gathered last Monday to mark the drawing to a close of Eric Walters' year as 7-day mens captain with a mixed Texas Scramble followed by refreshments. Eric has had a super year during which time he has led the mens section with humility, good humour and enthusiasm.  Eric accepted the chair of the 19th Club and worked with the other committee members following one of the clubs key objectives ''to draw the sections together to promote a happy and friendly atmosphere where everyone is treated with respect; free from discrimination and intimidation". As a keen member of the mixed team matches and a stalwart supporter of mixed club events Eric has led by example. Congratulations on a great year Eric and many thanks from all the sections! Now you can sit back and enjoy your golf in 2012 !

Geoff Reid is expected to succeed Eric as Mens 7-day Captain at the weekend, he will join Ladies Captain Kathy Stearn as co-club captains.

Please check your start times and if possible check that you playing partners and other competitors that you may speak to are aware of the new draw (posted on Mens 7-day and Ladies Section websites). KSGC Birdies on the Run!

posted 12 Jul 2011 08:07 by Members KSGC

In the latest of our fund raising events for Marie Curie, three of Kent and Surreys Ladies Section plus guest turned out for Britain's number one 10km road race, staged through the heart of the ceremonial grandeur of central London. In the midst of over 25,000 other runners Janet Redman, Kay Williams, Lisa Croke (guest) and myself lined up near Hyde Park Corner, the Band of Her Majesty's Lifeguards marched past and as you looked back down Piccadilly towards the Ritz the road was packed with runners - an amazing and inspiring sight. Shortly after the gun was fired to start the race, the elite athletes 'flew' past - I didn't realise people ran that fast for six and a quarter miles!!!  As well as the elite athletes, there were runners raising money for hundred of charities, en route Elvis, Shaun the Sheep and a Smirf were all spotted. The KSGC Birdies team all completed the event and then went on to celebrate with pizza and beer on the South Bank! If you were kind enough to sponsor us then we will be happy to collect your donations over this coming weekend via any of the Ladies Section. Well done girls and a massive thank you.. I promise not to suggest anything else like it again... well not for a while anyway! Clare

Stan Whiteside Team Competition

posted 12 Jul 2011 08:02 by Members KSGC

Kent and Surrey Men took three teams down to Hollingbury for the Stan Whiteside on Sunday 10th July and came back with 2nd place overall scoring 178pts for the 5 best scorers behind the home team B strings who rattled up a fantastic total of 198pts that’s an average of 39.5 points per player (who could live with that) the individual prize was won by a player from the Waterhall team who scored 46pts!!!!! Yes that’s 46pts off a handicap of 20, our placed team consisted of Mike Wright 36, David Grant 36 (playing off 11) Bob Hucks 31, Vic Couchman 34, Brian Sanford 34 and the main man of the team drafted in at the last minute Garry Hutton who got 38pts from only 16 holes, well done Garry.
The 5th place team scoring 172pts were Chris Town 36, Don Guinan 31 Matthew Bashford 36 Peer Blakeley 34 Mike Mellins 28 and your Captain 35 only 6pts off of our top team (I am not jealous) but if only the final six were Brian Avery 35 Steve Standing 21 !!!! (what happened Steve) John Davidson 23 Bob Smith 33 Cliff Oliver 28 and last gasp stand in Alistair Noble 31 (drafted in yesterday).
We all, I am told, enjoyed the event and look forward to taking part again next year when with better luck we will not run into people in such good form as this year my thanks to all of you. Eric

Canarie's and Wrens take flight again

posted 6 Jul 2011 11:29 by Members KSGC   [ updated 6 Jul 2011 11:51 ]

Last weekend saw the ladies and gentlemen of Kent and Surrey take on the Cockerels and Hens from Dorking and regain their winning thread, the course although not in the greatest of condition played well and local knowledge came to the fore. The teams I am told, were very evenly matched and the scores reflected this but we secured the win 4 to 2 the mens captain could not play in the match due to him having to play his singles but he was on hand to congratulate the team for their splendid performance, he was aptly deputised by Geoff Reade, a special mention to Cliff Oliver who it seems remains unbeaten in these events no matter who he is paired with (don't all rush) and long may this continue.
