THE KENTISH SAIL ASSOCIATION was established in 1972 to promote and run an annual Swale smack and sailing barge match. Since then it has organised thirty-eight matches which usually take place each August. The matches start at Harty Ferry, on courses which take the big boats out on an offshore course towards the 'Spaniard' along the coast past Whitstable and Herne Bay. The smaller gaffers race on a course around the Swale Estuary. 2011 will mark the 39th Swale Match. The races are a magnificent sight and attract a large armada of spectators.
