This very site [which is reachable via

www.tinyurl.com/janmabhumi or via www.bit.ly/janmabhumi] contains very interesting information

about the original, ancient birth site of Lord Sri Krishna at Mathura, U.P., India.

The huge temple built beside the mosque, where presently thousands of pilgrims go daily for darshan was established only 27 years ago [i.e. in 1984 A.D. .... but Lord Krishna appeared more than 5000 years ago!

50 years ago a Ganga Devi temple had been established there. Naturally, it is such a big monument, it captures the attention of everyone. And although this big temple is dedicated to the birth pastime of Lord Krishna, the actual ancient (pracīna) birth site is about 250 metres away. It has been preserved for thousands of years by the descendants of the original pujaris, known as the Twelve Goswamis.

LORD KESHAV DEV

Lord Keshavdev, the ancient deity of the 12 Goswamis families. This deity has the icons of 24 avatāras of

Lord Krishna (Vishnu) around Him. One can see that only once a year, on Akṣaya Tṛtīya Day, when

the Lord has His Chandan Yātra, and His entire body is smeared with sandalwood paste to cool Him in the summer heat.

Originally Lord Keshavdev is one of the deities installed by Lord Krishna's great-grandson after Lord Krishna departed this world.

(It is claimed on this website that the original Keshavji deity is in Rajdhani village, near Kanpur. If that is so, then either this deity or that deity is a 'prati-bhu' deity, i.e. a duplicate or replacement deity Who is non-different. Due to the deities of Vṛndāvan & Mathura having to run and hide in different places to avoid destruction by Aurangzeb, wherever they resided, duplicate temples were established. Several examples of this can be seen at Rādhā Kuṇḍa - Śrī Śrī Rādhā Govinda, Śrī Śrī Rādhā Madan Mohan etc.)

----------------------------

Even till today, Lord Keshava owns*

(a) the land where the mosque stands,

(b) the land where His present temple stands,

(c) the great Potarā Kuṇḍa

and (d) the original janma bhumi site!

This is solid evidence of the authenticity of the location.

Even the architecture of the existing temple ruins

at the Lord's birthsite matches the

architecture of the temple of Lord Keshava ji.

-----------------------------

In ancient times, a grand temple had been constructed for Lord Keshava nearby the birth site (where the mosque stands today). It would not have been proper for anyone to disturb the birthsite and build a temple on top of it. When the inimical muslims came to destroy, naturally the monumental temple of Lord Keshava captured their attention and they destroyed it and then used the same stones to erect the present mosque. The original birth site however remained untouched.

Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu also visited this holy site and sat down there - His Baitak (sitting place) is still preserved up till this day at this original birth place. Lord Caitanya's taking darshan of Lord Keshava and visiting the birth site of Lord Krishna is documented clearly in the Caitanya Caritāmṛta:-

CC Madhya 17.156

mathurā āsiyā kailā ‘viśrānti-tīrthe’ snāna

‘janma-sthāne’ ‘keśava’ dekhi’ karilā praṇāma

Synonyms:

mathurā āsiyā — coming in to Mathurā; kailā — performed; viśrānti-tīrthe — at the bathing place known as Viśrāma-ghāṭa; snāna — bathing; janma-sthāne — at the place of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s birth; keśava — the Deity named Keśava; dekhi’ — seeing; karilā praṇāma — offered His respectful obeisances.

Translation:

When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu entered the city of Mathurā, He took His bath at Viśrāma-ghāṭa. He then visited the birthplace of Kṛṣṇa and saw the Deity named Keśavajī. He offered His respectful obeisances to this Deity.

In Mathura and Vrindavan, the system for continuity of worship was that the chief pujari's family would be responsible for the temple and its lands, and when he passed away, his descendents would inherit that responsibility. Such families generally have the title of Goswami. Similarly, there are 12 Goswami families presently who are jointly responsible for the seva and temple of Lord Keshava. Their fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers etc all worshipped this holy site, on the street known as Mallapuram, on the northern side of Potarā Kuṇḍa, generation after generation.

What had been destroyed (3 times by inimical muslims rulers) where the mosque now stands was the temple of the ancient deity Lord Keshava, but the deity was saved and was brought back to Mathura many years later by the Goswami families who have been looking after Him all along.

Lord Keshava's present temple (which is located just outside the back gate of the large, new janma bhumi complex) was reconstructed in 2002. Previously it had been renovated 350 before by the Maratha King Madhava. When he renovated that temple, at the same time, he renovated the Janma Bhumi (original birth site) and the great pond, Potra Kund. This is solid archaeological evidence of the fact that this janma bhumi has been connected with the temple of Lord Keshava since ancient times.

Even till today, Lord Keshava owns* (a) the land where the mosque stands, (b) the land where His present temple stands, (c) the great Potarā Kuṇḍa and (d) the original janma bhumi site. This is solid evidence of the authenticity of the location.

Potarā Kuṇḍa (the place where Devakī washed her soiled clothes after the birth of Lord Krishna)

28 large steps down! Each step is nearly one foot! Majestic!

Perhaps 4-5000 people can sit in these steps at one time!

"Keśavdev mandir ke...."

(*deities can own land in India - that is how the worship can continue generation after generation - the land endowed to the deity provides income for the running of the temple and the maintenance of the Brahmanas who are dedicated to serving the deity

The birth site itself was never destroyed and has remained in tact. It is in a state of disrepair, though, presently, but by the desire of the Lord's devotees, perhaps soon a gorgeous temple may manifest, for the pleasure of the devotees of our dearmost Lord. At this site also there is a pillar on display - it is from the old Keshav temple in which King Madhav had renovated. Carved in that stone pillar is Devaki Stuti - the wonderful prayers that Devaki sang to Krishna upon His birth.

Ancient & Real Birthplace of Lord Krishna

There is one old (slightly broken and crooked) signboard near the North-Eastern corner of Potarā Kuṇḍa which announces, 'Ancient and Real Birth Site of Lord Sri Krishna - 50m ahead'. This signboard refers to the 1872 publication "Mathura - A District Memoir" by the then-District Collect of Mathura, Shri F. S. Growes. He identified and acknowledged this place as the original ibirth place of Lord Sri Krishna. (see this page.)

The caretaker of Potara Kuṇḍ, a national monument and an elderly, retired citizen.

Most of the local people, especially the elderly, do accept this spot as being the place which was the centre of focus of Janmashtami celebrations in Mathura, up till the time the great new complex overshadowed this place, and, for various reasons, it became dilapidated and neglected.

Here is an audio recording of a random interview of some local residents who were relaxing near Potarā Kuṇḍa recently (May 2011) - http://www.ziddu.com/download/15241636/AIntervJanmaBhumiLocals-2011-05-21_13h09m11s.mp3.html

Shri Krishna Chandra Goswami is a learned brahmana in the line of Goswamis who have been serving Lord Keshava's original Janma Bhumi for generations. Here are three audio clips of him answering (in Hindi) some queries about the authenticity of this sacred spot:

Interview with Shri Krishna Chandra Goswami about Original Birth Site of Lord Krishna* from Dina-Anukampana Das on Vimeo - www.bit.ly/janmabhumi2

Above* is a short video clip of an interview (in Hindi) with Shri Krishna Chandra Goswami, one of the Trustees & Pujaris of the site & temple which, for many generations, their family has worshipped and served as the original birth site of Lord Sri Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The complete interview in audio format can be found at www.tinyurl.com/janmabhumi

After seeing all the documents which Shri Krishna Chandra showed and hearing all his explanations, I have become convinced that this is the ancient birth site of Lord Sri Krishna - documented as such at least since 1872 - whereas the current big temple which is commonly known today as the Janma Bhumi is only 27 years old (estd. 1984)
