Krey Essentials - Visitor Info

Driving to Krey Field

Make sure you have directions before you drive out. Google maps will recognize "Krey Field" and give good turn by turn directions and photos of all turns except the last one. See the side bar links under Location/Airport Info.

Parkdale is the main entrance road off of Sheep Creek. It is possible to blow right past Parkdale, although it is marked with a white post and arrow sign saying Krey Field.  It is much harder to miss the Dairy (AKA, The Fly Factory) on the west side of Sheep Creek, especially if your windows are down!  If you go all the way past the Dairy, you have gone too far. Although Parkdale is a dirt road, it is well packed and drivable by passenger car at speeds up to 40mph, but if you go off road or make a wrong turn, you can easily get stuck.

Even though the last Field turnoff is only a mile down Parkdale from Sheep Creek, it can be very difficult to see.  Make note of your odometer reading as you leave Sheep Creek, and at 9/10 mile slow down and look for a small silver, "T" shaped sign made from pipe on the far side of the intersection on the right.  Turn right and you should see the tops of trees and a windsock about 45 degrees to your right.  Head for the trees/windsock and park short of the flight line under the trees.

Flying in to Krey Field

Krey is a large strip easily visible from the air from miles away, even at airliner altitudes. It is a real, surveyed, permanent airport and clearly shown on the sectional. See the links under Location/Airport Info

You can fly out in your aircraft, but you must have Krey's permission and give him a copy of your insurance policy.  He doesn't care about your Hull Coverage, if you mess up your aircraft it is YOUR problem, as long as you don't leave debris on the Field.  His concern is mainly that you hit something valuable of his and then refuse to pay for it (Sadly, this has happened)  It would be a very good idea to drive out first and look at the landing and parking spots, and perhaps find a tiedown.  Although there is a strip of ground asphalt 1500' long that is very landable with anything short of a light twin, you need to be careful where you taxi , else you could get stuck or worse.

Krey Field Hours

At this time, Krey Field regular hours are Fridays and Saturdays from about 11AM to 5PM.  However, if you want to fly on other days or times, we will open by appointment. Find a tow pilot and contact Krey at least 48 hours prior.  See Krey Contacts link for pilots that will be available on Sundays or during the week.  If you decide to visit when the Field is closed, use common courtesy.  Let Krey know when you are coming and leave the facilities clean and close the gate behind you.

Facilities

Did I say facilities? Let me be more clear... There is a trailer which serves as sort of a meeting area with a toilet and a bunk room.  It has natural HVAC (windows) but power is available only when Krey has the generator going. Otherwise, no phone, no city water, and the nearest gas/food/"restuarant" (I use that term very loosely) is 5 miles away.  Best to bring all you need with you, including lots of water.
Although Krey is NOT in the middle of nowhere as some have claimed, it is a good 5 mile walk to the edge of somewhere...
