Term 2
Kahikatea Year 5 & 6 in the Tararua Team.
Housekeeping..... Spelling notebooks must be returned back to school for the buddy test on each FRIDAY.  Yellow homework books are due back on the Friday of the even week.
Our present Science Inquiry topic is the Living World.... we are learning about native birds' structure, adaptation and function.
Thanks to the wonderful parents who provided transport to Mount Bruce on Friday 4th May! We appreciated your time and help. Our day was very successful. We saw eels that travel to Tonga, Kererus up high in the Kahikatea trees and Manukura the white kiwi as well as so much more!

Please check that maths timetables are being learnt at home as a reinforcement. Your child knows what he/she is learning each week. Week 5 is 8 times table.
ICT-SuperclubPlus is up and running. This was introduced at school and is an excellent programme. Studyladder for maths is starting up this week. Your child has his/her own password for both programmes.
Writer of the Week is Caitlin  with her powerful argument story "Should native birds be protected?.
We are busy writing persuasive argument stories this term.
These point of view stories recently done are titled "Pesky Possums".

Sixtus Camp at the end of Term 2 was an amazing adventure and success.  Thanks to the dedicated parents who drove us there, cooked, cleaned, tramped, laughed, supervised us  and shared our four day journey of challenges in the Ruahine Ranges near Apiti.

Writing of the personal experiences in the bush.
HOUSEKEEPING-
We are working on self management strategies this term... showing the values of consideration and responsibility. Also managing self.
Spelling notebooks need to be returned each Friday for our buddy test. Spelling words need to be learnt Monday - Thursday.  Children are expected to read each night and fill in the form in the notebook.

Buddy testing spelling in action-

Yellow homework books go home on even weeks with a sheet to complete.
Keep looking at this site because each week it's different with lots of interesting information and pictures about what your child is doing.

Pop in and see our work....
In Kahikatea we have high work expectations. In this way we work hard, we try our best, we take pride in ourselves and all of our work and our environment. We display the values of Duty and Consideration.

OurFarSouth- Passion Inquiry Study-
Our Passion Study was called 'OurFarSouth'. The key points of this study were linked to our past study of Pioneer Days/Early Settlers. The follow on Passion Study involves ... Adventure  Heroes, Survival. Thanks to the OurFarSouth crew members Richard and John who came in to share their experiences with us.
We have been following the voyage, watching the enterprises and reading information also reading and writing blogs to the crew and  scientists. As well we have our own key question..... "Why is this area and many living creatures threatened in the Antarctica?".
Yes detailed art work is of a Puffin Penguin drawn by Caitlin and we now know the differences between Antarctic penguins and Puffin penguins!
We have been researching information and learning a huge amount.
Thanks to OurFarSouth crew and organisers for providing the massive amount of real-life activities and information that we have received each day.
Kitty wrote an excellent Moment in Time story. Pop in and have a read of all of the wonderful stories!
