Assignment 2: Outline

Grace Kim
26 April 2009

Background: Motivation for the Website

  • As a second generation Korean American, I find myself at the boundary of two very different cultures. Although I've lived in the U.S. all my life, one facet of my Korean roots that remains an integral part of my everyday life is Korean food.  My love for the culinary aspect of my heritage combined with my passion for cooking sparked my desire to share this incredible world of Korean cooking with others.
  • In my experience, it can be difficult to find convenient, reliable recipes for common Korean dishes.  In order to foster interest in Korean cooking, recipes and information about dishes have to be more readily available and user-friendly for Korean Americans and anyone else new to Korean cuisine.

Objectives
  • Teach people who are new to Korean food about the wide variety of dishes that exist within Korean cuisine
  • Encourage people to try new dishes and thus explore the entire gamut of Korean food
  • Provide easy, simple recipes for dishes commonly eaten in Korean homes
  • Demonstrate the significance of food in Korean culture by sharing memories of Korean cooking

Website Layout
  • The website will be organized into the following sections found in the Navigation sidebar: Home, Meet the Dishes, Korean Ingredients, Recipes, Memories of Korean Cooking, Works Cited
  • Recipes will be organized by alphabetical order with a short English description of the dish in parentheses next to the name of the dish so that people new to Korean cooking can more easily find the dish or type of dish they're looking for
  • Pictures of Korean food will be included throughout the website to stimulate interest in dishes and recipes

Proposed Content

Home:
  • Introduce the reader to the website - its purpose, objectives, and offered resources
  • Encourage the reader to begin exploring the world of Korean cooking
Meet the Dishes:
  • Provide a description of each dish so that the reader may become familiar with the ingredients, cooking methods, and special cultural significance (if any) of each dish
  • Spark interest in trying certain dishes
  • Allow the reader to easily access the recipe for each dish after reading about it
Korean Ingredients:
  • Describe the ingredients unique to Korean cooking
  • Make Korean cooking less intimidating and foreign by familiarizing the reader with unique Korean ingredients
Recipes:
  • Provide simple recipes for common Korean dishes in convenient American units
  • Provide step-by-step recipes with pictures for three of the most popular and famous Korean dishes: Doenjang jjigae, Kalbi, and Bibimbap
Memories of Korean Cooking:
  • Present interviews of several relatives about their memories of and experiences with Korean cooking
  • Emphasize the importance of food to Korean culture by providing a glimpse of the memories associated with Korean food
Works Cited:
  • Provide citations that offer sources from my research in building the website that the reader can look up if he/she wants to learn more
Target Audience
  • Korean Americans who want to learn how to cook Korean food
  • People who have tasted Korean food in restaurants and want to learn how to make Korean food in their own homes
  • People who are completely new to Korean cooking but want to learn more about it and perhaps try a few easy recipes
Obstacles
  • People automatically dismiss the recipes as too difficult if they cannot recognize the ingredients
  • The recipe collection appears too limited in my attempt to make Korean cooking approachable
  • People will click on only those recipes for dishes that they're familiar with or have heard of
Competition
  • My website emphasizes user-friendliness and approachability
  • The lack of websites like mine initially spurred me to create my website
  • My website offers both education about Korean cooking and recipes in one (I will provide links among the dish description pages, ingredient description pages, and recipes)
