GeoGebra conference report

The First Nationwide GeoGebra Conference in Poland

The First Nationwide GeoGebra Conference in Poland took place on 18th September 2010 in the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS). The initiator of the conference was the Warsaw GeoGebra Centre.



It was organized by the:
  • Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities,
  • Warsaw GeoGebra Centre,
  • Institute of Social Psychology of the Internet and Communication (SPIK),
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun (Wydział Matematyki i Informatyki Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu),
  • Association of Regional Centres of E-Learning ROSE


Masovian Voivodeship’s Education Curator and the Orange Foundation took honorary patronage over the conference.

The addressees of the conference were teachers of mathematics at all levels of education, school principals, staff and students of teacher training colleges and all interested in the use of modern information and communication technologies in the teaching process. Participation in the conference was free of charge.



Over 200 participants attended the conference, including representatives of the Masovian Voivodeship’s Board of Trustees, Mrs. Jadwiga Czartoryska - President of the Orange Foundation, Mrs. Barbara Dylus - representative of Microsoft Poland, as well as foreign guests: Professor Maria Dworzecka of George Mason University (USA), Valentine Scovoroda Pikalova of Kharkiv National Pedagogical University (Ukraine) and Professor Lénárt István from Hungary.



Individuals and institutions most closely involved in improving the quality of Polish education, especially in popularization of educational software GeoGebra, were given diplomas for their engagement.
Diplomas were awarded to:
  • Mrs. Marzanna Miasko,
  • Mrs. Edyta Pobiega,
  • Mr. Jerzy Mill,
  • Orange Foundation (at the hands of the President Mrs. Jadwiga Czartoryski) and
  • members of the Association ROSE, GeoGebra Experts.


The conference started with lectures on education in the Internet era and the possibility of using GeoGebra  as an auxiliary tool in the classroom, delivered by Professor Andrzej Nowak - "Education in the Internet Age," Dr. Katarzyna Winkowska-Nowak - "Geometry + Algebra = GeoGebra.”


There were also three plenary sessions on the issue of e-learning in school, and lectures on the use of GeoGebra in high school and college. Lectures for teachers of secondary schools were conducted by Mrs. Edyta Pobiega - "The Graph of a Linear Function as an Example of the Use of GeoGebra’s Different Tools"m Mrs. Monika Niemczyk - "Examples of using GeoGebra during High School Mathematics Courses" and Mr. Jerzy Mill – “GeoGebra and 3D.”

Lectures for university employees were given by Dr. Tomasz Karolak, - “Circles and Disks in Different Metrics on the Plane”, Dr. Robert Skiba, - “CAS and GeoGebra”, Dr. Krzysztof Leśniak – “Functions of Two Variables”, Dr. Anna Rybak – “GeoGebra in Preparing Students to Teach Mathematics”.


The practical aspects of using GeoGebra were taught during parallel thematic sessions for the four levels of education. Sessions were conducted under the direction of GeoGebra Experts and Trainers certified by the International GeoGebra Institute: Mrs. Bożena Szymanowicz, Mrs. Joanna Osio, Mrs. Edyta Purczyćnska, Mrs. Hanna Zimniak, Mrs. Anna Szwancyber,  Mrs. Teresa Zielińska, Mrs. Mirela Robakowska and Mr. Krzysztof Winnicki.


At the end of the conference plenary sessions were held. Mr. Krzysztof Winnicki presented “Experiences with E-Learning in School”, and Mrs. Joanna Osio – “GeoGebra and E-Learning”. At the end Dr. Katarzyna Winkowska-Nowak gave a speech "GeoGebra - an International Perspective."

Conference materials in an enhanced version, along with examples of the use of GeoGebra at different levels of education will appear in the book, GeoGebra – Introduction to Innovative Education to be published by the Nicolaus Copernicus University Press in December 2010.

After the conference, GeoGebra e-learning courses have begun, which attracted a large number of the conference’s participants. Currently, recruitment is conducted for the next session and a new range of courses is being prepared.
