In case you are wondering what it feels like running for mayor
We have arrived at a critical time in our history. Let us begin to set the course of our city for the next 100 years. We can design our city to be more efficient, user friendly and sustainable. We can learn to consume smarter and consume less without sacrificing well being and at the same time increase the quality of life we live here.
Flagstaff needs to build the broadest possible political coalition to transform our little village into a sustainable economy while maintaining our old time charm and pace. To be truly sustainable
our workers need living wages and affordable housing. Ours needs to be a local living economy. That is, we produce most of what we consume locally including food, building materials, energy, clothing materials.
We need to work for:
JOBS that produce -
Efficient pollution-free transportation,
Clean sustainable energy production,
Low cost high performance energy efficient buildings,
Locally grown organic foods,
Free access to information, education, news, networking and email/communication systems,
Recyclable, pollution and waste free products for consumption
Let us all support an effective city plan so that it will be a positive result for everyone in our city.
We cannot have a sustainable economy when only 20 percent of the people can afford to pay for hybrids, solar panels and organic foods while the other 80% are still driving pollution-based vehicles to the same pollution-based jobs and struggling to purchase pollution-based products.
I propose these concepts for our citizens to consider:
City - Promote construction of high performance, energy efficient buildings: save money and make homes and other buildings more livable, more equitable, and healthier environments. The LEEDS program fails in this regard. Flagstaff should commit to large City investment in sustainable energy production that does not rely on entrenched polluting utilities.
· This would help produce high wage jobs for our citizens
· It would provide a large revenue stream for city investments
· It would also support local businesses
invite new high tech and green companies to plug their lap tops into our clean energy supply
Drive investment in our city: renewing our commitment to building smart public infrastructure for transportation, energy, and other vital public services. Making sure that all areas of our town share equality in this process.
Business - Help businesses increase revenue in a ecological and sustainable way. By making our town a truly sustainable system we will attract many more visitors and businesses than we have ever dreamed of. Using new technologies and designs to increase efficiency to reduce energy and resource waste; reduce trash waste and pollution and thereby reduce costs.
Labor - Use the resources of this plan to help provide a survival wage in our town while designing sustainable high performance and yet affordable housing for our workers. (see the sustainability link at bottom of page)
A survival wage in our town is $12.00 an hour at the minimum.
Education - Our city will support educating our citizens to help them increase their opportunities and quality of life. We will use the new technologies and the internet to bring the educational resources of the world to our community. (see internet outlet)
Elderly - make sure our town is user friendly for the elderly physically and economically.
TREES - Let us make our village a green canopy oasis during summer.
I see the office of mayor as one of identifying needs in our community and connecting those needs with our community resources. I believe the mayor should be the voice of all of the people, even those who do not have a voice. I hope that Sara will become a hands-on inclusive facilitator, a flexible and creative problem solver and listener.
We Still Need a Town Hall Meeting
And Lets Invite Everyone
We need to set our priorities as a community
