Family and Consumer Sciences

We believe in empowering individuals, strengthening families and enabling communities

Class Objective:

Family and Consumer Sciences is a class where students integrate their skills from math, English and science and apply them to “real life” problem solving.  Students learn to use tools and resources to create a personalized sewing project and then go on to learn about nutrition and food preparation.  Students learn to measure ingredients correctly, use the microwave, stove top, oven and other kitchen equipment and tools to create delicious recipes.  They also learn how different foods were influenced by American history (did you know that sugar was rationed during WWII because it was needed to make bombs?) and how different cultures have influenced the foods that Americans eat and accept as “normal” (did you know that most cultures consider corn on the cob to be a food fit only for animals?)  Family and Consumer Sciences explores all this and more!

Fun Trivia about Ms. Nolan...

She comes from a large Irish Catholic family – she has 37 first cousins!

She collects George Washington memorabilia

She is originally from Rochester, NY (home of Kodak and the final home of Susan B. Anthony)

She loves cats - she has 5 of her own and helps to place neighborhood strays in adoptive homes

At 5’9” she is the shortest out of 4 kids

She has performed with both Saoirse Irish Dancers and Gibson School of Irish Dance

Although she is mostly Irish, she also has German, French and English roots

She has climbed Mount Washington (elevation 6288 ft) and the Carter-Moriah Mountain range in New Hampshire

Her grandfather (Joe Maley) was a professional baseball player (pitcher) with the Cleveland Indians in the late 1930’s...but when WWII started her grandma told him that he needed "a real job"!

She rarely speaks English when she’s at home (mostly Spanish!)

She started sewing at age 12.  Her father used to buy fabric for her at estate sales and bring it home.  Ms. Nolan used to experiment with it by making clothes and gifts for her     friends and family.  Her initial efforts weren’t too promising…when making her first blouse, she accidentally sewed the sleeve to the neck opening!
