History

The creation myth of the followers of Matria says that all the sentient races are descended from one single original ancestor.
The division into separate races happened when Matria spiritual messengers, the Celestians, became jealous of Matria creations and corrupted the "First Ones" as the original race is now called by the church. Matria split the First Ones into many different races and threw the Celestians out of the Chamber of Stars and they are now known as the Kenrah.

Matria rose up her first prophet among the humans called Magian. He wrote down the seven holy virtues and developed the Book of Prayers. A dwarf scholar names Herias Stonghand was raised up by Matria to finish the Holy Book of Matria.

The church has a presence in all the Five Kingdoms, but especially Myrtia and Lucidor.

Doctrine

The basic belief of all followers of Matria is that their God created all that lives within the world and placed the sun, moon and stars in the sky. They believe that this act of creation is the fundamental part of creation and that the world has always existed and shall always exist.

They believe that Matria is pre-eminent among all gods. A major future prophesy predicts the rise of a prophet of Matria from each of the races of the earth, with each prophets arrival predicted by certain signs. The prophets will combine supernaturally and form Matria, incarnate, on Ebonyr.

The 7 Holy Virtues

* Chastity - Courage and boldness. Embracing of moral wholesomeness and achieving purity of thought through education and betterment.

* Abstinence - Constant mindfulness of others and one's surroundings; practicing self-control, abstention, and moderation.

* Liberality - Generosity. Willingness to give. A nobility of thought or actions.

* Diligence - A zealous and careful nature in one's actions and work. Decisive work ethic. Budgeting one's time; monitoring one's own activities to guard against laziness.

* Patience - Forbearance and endurance through moderation. Resolving conflicts peacefully, as opposed to resorting to violence. The ability to forgive; to show mercy to sinners.

* Kindness - Charity, compassion, friendship, and sympathy without prejudice and for its own sake.

* Humility - Modest behavior, selflessness, and the giving of respect. Giving credit where credit is due; not unfairly glorifying one's own self.

Organization

The church of Matria has a very strong, centrally controlled structure with the hierarchy of the church having at its peak the Matriarch. The Matriarch also holds the title or Sanctor of Myrcia.  She holds absolute power over the Church and is believed to be the voice of Matria on Ebonyr.

The Matriarch is resident in a large series of palaces known as the Sanctuary in Castlecliff, Myrcia. The Sanctuary is almost a small town in its own right containing residences, marketplaces and storehouses as well as churches and temples. The Sanctuary also contains the meeting place of the Council of Matrons, which form the advisory body to the Matriarch and elect a new Matriarch from their number on the death of the previous holder of the title.

Matrons are the senior priests of the church and hold leadership positions over the various departments. Currently there are 22 Matrons holding positions. Six of the Matrons represent the various parts of Myrcia itself, there are three from Lucidor and two each from both Heldon and Borgravia. There is only one Matron in Altalissia where the church presence is the weakest. Most of the major cities and towns in Myrcia and Lucidor have a Matron.
Below the Matrons the organization of the Church of Matria splits into two distinct wings. There is the Ministry wing which represents the churches and lay worshippers. The other wing is the militant and charity orders. They teach new adherents, protect the church and dispense charity.

Benefits/Restrictions of Membership

Membership in the church is a road to considerable temporal power as well as spiritual enlightenment and knowledge. Clergy are obligated to help each other and hold at least most of their property in common. All races are allowed to become clergy in the church, but humans tend to be the only race elected into the Matron ranks.

Religious Orders

Keepers of the Codex

They are the traditionalists and conservatives of the church - fanatical, focusing on church power and wealth They have little tolerance for heretical (in its minds) cults and other orders. They are mostly scholars and teach Deacons and Archdeacons in in depth church doctrine.

Swords of Peace

This is a militant order of the church. They teach martial prowess, confidence, and strength, to protect and defend others. They also search out evil and chaos and remove it from the world. They make other members of the church uncomfortable.

Sanctorian Knights

The Sanctorian Knights are a fanatically militant religious order and protector of the Church. Their headquarters is Falls Keep in Castlecliff.

Their arms are symbolic of their creed: the black field represents the night and the darkness of the Abyss, in which their prey lurks. The crossed swords are white, for the purity of their unswerving purpose to Matria, and the points are uppermost, indicating that the swords of the Brethren will never rest while evil exists to be fought. The four torteaux represent the blood of the Unholy and any who aid or shield them, to be spilled liberally and without stint or mercy.
The Sanctorian Knights are the personal bodyguards of the Matriarch, the Council of Matrons and the Sanctor of Castlecliff, whom they derive their name.

Sword Brethren

Sword Brethren are always male and celibate. This rule is quite strict and unyielding. Membership is open to any warrior of free birth and unblemished morals, but a novitiate of at least a year (and often longer) is required before one may become a Professed Brother. Although it is not stated policy, it is apparent that noble birth is highly advantageous to a prospective novice.

Once the oath is taken at the end of one's novitiate, membership of the order is for life; there is no way besides death to leave the order, and recreants are pursued with as much vigor and hatred as the enemies of the church. In theory, once professed one is supposed to give up any family ties; that particular rule is seldom observed with absolute rigor.

The organization of the Order is rigidly hierarchical. The lowliest professed rank is that of Brother Sergeant, while the highest rank is that of Grand Master; the present holder of that office is the Sanctor of Castlecliff, a rigorously pious and ruthless man who rules the Order with an iron fist in an iron glove.

At present the Order numbers about two hundred and fifty professed Brethren, and an indeterminate number (perhaps as many as two thousand) of novices and lay men-at-arms. As a military force they are relatively small, but they make up for lack in numbers by superb equipment and training, unsurpassed discipline and fixity of purpose.

The Sword Brethren are, by and large, remarkably lacking in any sort of sense of humor.

The Sisters of the Heart

The Sisters of the Heart are a long-established militant religious order. The heart of the order is Draica, Capital of Lucidor, though there are Chapter Houses in most cities of any size.

The head of the order is called Mother Superior, and in formal communication the Sisters refer to each other as Elder Sister, Younger Sister or just Sister (depending on relative rank). The Sister at the head of each Chapter House is given the title of Mother.

The Sisters had their beginnings as a nursing order working to heal the wounds inflicted in battle, but they long ago realized (after a series of unsavory and sometimes fatal incidents) that could not rely on others — men, specifically — for protection while doing their work among the battlefields.

They began to train and arm themselves as their own bodyguards, with considerable aid from the famed Swords of Peach, aid the Sisterhood has not forgotten. They have become quite efficient at looking after themselves and their charges, and as well as ministering to the sick and wounded they now often act in a protective role, patrolling city streets and ensuring that the balance of power between the sexes is skewed a little less in favor of the hairier gender.

They admit no males to their ranks in any capacity and do not marry (men or women), but they are not a celibate order and many Sisters enjoy casual or long-lasting liaisons with them (outside the walls of the Chapter Houses, of course). Males are permitted within the walls of the Sisterhood only in very limited circumstances; most commonly as patients in their hospitals, but also occasionally where special skills are required and not available among the Sisters themselves. The Chapter Houses are thus often used as places of refuge by women with a pressing need to be somewhere men can't get at them.

The Sisters of the Heart make no official distinction when it comes to healing the wounded. They will give as much care and attention to the wounds of someone who had been trying to kill them as they will to their allies — though if they sometimes tend to their friends first, we perhaps shouldn't be surprised.

Order of the Lady (Brown Robes)

It is a brotherhood and sisterhood of persons who can originate in any social quarter, religious, spiritual, or secular, to come together in belief in Matria, and want to spread her message throughout Ebonyr.

History
The order was started by Deacon Mathis about 50 years ago. To do the following:

There was to be a community of priests gathered around Our Lady, Matria.

Each house would be a kind of shrine of Our Lady's presence, in a way that would be clear to all and powerful, since this was Her work.
From there the Matria's message (Our Lady's message) would go out to the world.

Vows
Wholehearted Free service to the Poorest of the Poor.
Deliver the Lady's message to the world

Here are the colors of the Order, and the values and concepts they denote:
BROWN: Mature love, and personal warmth. The robe will always be a shade of brown.
Deep, dark brown: robe color worn by new members. Dark brown is close to black, the color representing a state of non-love (see below).
Medium brown: robe color worn by intermediate members. Most members will wear medium brown robes.
Light Brown: robe color worn by longstanding members, or those who have demonstrated a great capacity to love.
Lighter shades of brown represent progress in learning to negotiate every life circumstance and situation with love, in regard to loving others, and ourselves.
The robes are different shades of brown, but they are all brown, representing (1.) the fact that these struggles pose difficulty for everyone, no matter their level of advancement, (2.) a basic equality of members.

Greetings
In love brother
In love sister

Farewell
Peace to you
Peace to you all

Titles
New members, and those who have yet to exceed their first and initial rank, might be called "Novices," "Apprentices," or simply "Students."
Longer-standing members, and those who have achieved a significant level of proficiency, might be called "Guides," "Mentors," or "Teachers," though as described above, they are also students, broadly speaking.
Those who have achieved the highest or near-highest level of proficiency, or what we might preliminarily call "mastery" of principle and practice, might be called "Masters," though again, as described above, they too are students in the broadest sense.
