Overview

The museum provides educational programs and lectures for schools at all levels. The most popular of these are the Cultural Literacy Program and the School Outreach Program.

School Outreach Programs

Mini-Museums

As part of the school outreach program, Mini-Museums are maintained in local schools. In keeping with its mission of education through historical and cultural study, the Karpeles Manuscript Museum provides the Mini-Museum Program, as satellite access to the museum’s collection. The Mini-Museum includes a high quality reproduction and an accompanying guide card explaining the document’s historical significance. These are enclosed in a plexiglass display case provided by the Museum. The documents are exchanged every 4-6 weeks during the school year.

A new feature to our Mini-Museum Program is the companion Curriculum Connections. Order a Mini-Museum document online and then get curriculum connection ideas through our Curriculum Connections, online web links.

Mini-Museums are presently located in more than 20 Fort Wayne-area schools. These documents are to be viewed, studied, discussed, and enjoyed as part of teachers’ lesson plans and educational focus. Through this program, tens of thousands of children across the country have gained access to some of the most important documents in history! Realizing the need to reach all the school, the Karpeles Manuscript Museum is currently seeking additional school locations for its Mini-Museum program.

Educational Outreach

There is no cost to participating institutions as we fund this program through our not-for-profit foundation. Educational exhibits of manuscript reproductions on various topics including: historical, literary, political, musical, and scientific, are available on an on-going basis. Such exhibits are changed by the museum at least every two months. These are free programs and any grade school, secondary school, college or university may participate. Interested school leaders should contact the Education Curator 260-456-6929.

Lectures for Little Folks

School programs are also available for the following classes:

Kindergarten (and pre-school) Goofy Government: Advanced government theory for Kindergarteners and the younger set. Original film cells have been crafted into a enchanting explanation of the United States government. Follow Disney's loveable Goofy as he learns about the basics of government, why we have a government and some of the things government does for the people.

Second Grade Captain Hook and the Thesaurus. Captain Hook is feeling a little down, as some people think he is EVIL. Come along with the Captain as he learns the nuances of words through the use of the Thesaurus. Is he really evil or would the words tricky, mean, mischievous, or ornery do just as well? This program utilizes film cells from the Disney movie Peter Pan.

Third Grade Fairy Tales from Hans Christian Anderson. Anderson is known for his popular works like The Emperor's New Clothes and The Little Mermaid, but in his lifetime he wrote down nearly 22 stories. Several are shared through the illustrations of Helen Stratton.

Fourth Grade Abraham Lincoln as a Child. A lot is being said about Lincoln as we approach the 200th anniversary of his birth. This presentation takes children through Lincoln's childhood and the events that formed his character. The illustrations are based on those included in the 1963 book, A Picture Story, by Lloyd Ostendorf.
