| Q. whats photojournalism? A. its a mindset. everyone can take a camera and go out in wolrd and take photos, but you're not photojournalist unless you think about xx photos and you have a mission what you want to achieve with this. To me photojournalism is something that approaches the world with critical point of view, tries to showcase or to expose some problems or things that are injust, or sometimes it can just be to show a really good story that people can learn something or can get a another point of view of the world. Q. impact of the Internet on photojournalism? A. First of all, you ca use a lot more images than you can in traditional (noise) media, if newspapers or magazines showing your story, usually we get 4 or 5 pictures at the mosts to tell the entire story. but when you do online you can use hundreds of images to tell the story. secondary, you can have audio and maybe even video, which also presents new opportunities. For the kind of photojournalists who wants to use the online media they have an opportunities to do something more along the line of what filmmakers and these kinds of storytellers have done in past. So its like, telling a big whole story with your images rather than showing things through single images. I think thats one of the big opportunities. And of course, online media is worldwide distribution of your things. you can really become your own media whether you have a blog or you do online movies or whatever you do, you have a media where you can reach all over the world. Thats the big difference from the past. In the past you have to rely on photoeditor to take your story and put them on magazines or put them in exhibition or print a book. Now you dont have to go thorough these people anymore. you can be your own media. Q. drawbacks? A. one thing is that it still really difficult to work out how to actually monetize and make money from really good photo work online # 5:45 Its another way of experiencing stories to see them online, a book is something else. you Look at the story usually have more time and little depper. Secondary, a book is kind of a historical document that stays forever. but when you post a story online, you can never really know if its stays there. Its not as rock solid as old medium. Q There are new rights model such as creative commons etc. How do you manage the rights on the web. A. I am a big believer in what the Creative Commons is doing. Because I think one of the great opprtunities in the Internet is to collaborates and make even better stories by working together. I think Creative Commons creates legal playing field for doint this. I think Managing the whole thing is also an issue. Technology is the key aspect of this, creating technical tools that enables people to easily put rights on the content and easily see the where contents come from who own's the rights to this content. good example is when apple created itunes music store, suddenly people wanted pay for the music beause it became really easy. Using technology to make it as easy as possible is the key. Q. professional and non-professional are becoming more close? A. it depends on what kind of content you are talking about, for instance news content, its true that professionals and amateurs are blending together. In other kinds of stories, that are more background or in-depth kind of stories, still the professional approach has a big differnce to amatuere. |
