Philz's Answer

*ABOUT YOU

Name: Philz
Job: Student/Designer
Sex: Male

*ABOUT JAPAN

1. How did you meet Japanese culture first?

Actually moved from america to Japan when I was 7 months old, and lived there for 5 years.  Gone back often. Parents are Portuguese so we traveled a lot.

2. What kind of Japanese culture are you interested in?

Some of the Japanese traditions are interesting, and I like to "follow the culture" were ever I may be.  The best would be how in Japan, a lot of people have a good sense of style!  I like anime after growing up with it, but didn't watch it after leaving Japan till the last couple of years.  Still not many I do watch though...  I also enjoy a couple of Dramas an Otaku friend recommends :D .

3. How do you contact with Japanese culture? What kind of media do you use?

I'm currently relearning my Japanese, so I try to write when I can (barely...).  I have quite a few friends still in Japan and contact them regularly over skype/IM/email.  Otherwise like said before, tend to watch some Japanese TV from time to time.

4. Are there any communities talking about Japan around you?

Many.  America loves <3 japan. I remember in High School there was a "Japanese Culture and Animation Club", which I heard mostly consisted of watching Anime at lunch!  Otherwise you see reminders of Japanese influence all the time, just recently a show started that was called "I survived a Japanese game show" on ABC.  or Gwen Stafani having Japanese culture references in her songs. or more simple things like invasion of pokemon and other Japanese kids shows/games.

5. Are there any obstacles when you want to know about Japanese culture?

What is inconvenient for you? First would be the language barrier, as my Japanese is not nearly as good as when I lived in Japan. Then even though the net connects everyone, it is separated by languages and countries, at times it can be very hard to find were "Japanese" people hang out for a certain topic. Worse would be knowing about something via the internet but having no means of doing anything unless in the country! Though a minor unrelated thorn would be Japans non-existent immigration office and archaic visa rules, etc...  But progress is being made in that front recently!

6. Do you have something made in Japan? What is that?

At the moment, only a Mechanical Pencil/Pen (Zebra), Noodle snack (baby star? there addictive...), simple children's manga to practice reading & kanji flash-cards...

7. How is the impression about Japan in your country? In terms of america?

Super technological advanced country were even a hover car wouldn't be out of place. Really. In America they think everything is more advanced in Japan in almost any aspect.  Yet they think the Japanese people are goofy and maybe odd, but I think that is from silly TV shows like MXE and the new ABC show.  Overall I would say they are well respected, and not considered violent/hostile as maybe ~50 years ago in american culture.

9. Please tell us good points of Japan Japanese don't seem to notice.

Everyone is so polite! Even just walking the streets of Tokyo in crazy big crowds, you don't feel rushed or agitated.  Yet walk same streets of london and your watching for you bag, being bumped into constantly, people are rude and in a rush to go every were.  This can even be applied to the countryside, were people are still friendly and approachable (as long you don't act like a crazy american idiot or military man... but that goes for any country/culture!).

10. If you were born in Japan, what do you want to do?

Tough question.  I don't think it would change terribly from what I want to do right now. Which is either Business or Design (graphic/web/print). I think only change would be I would lean more towards design, rather than the business that I am right now. As Japan has already influenced me in such a way that I might move back some day. Growing up there, speaking English & Portuguese & little Japanese, gave me a really different childhood than most people that I'm around -_- .
