Syllabus

Goal:

Learn about how the Internet and new social media is impacting journalism.

Learn to use tools for researching, participating in and creating news and stories online.

Create a published story as a team using the tools that the team finds are the most suitable for their particular story and publish it to the world and present it to the class.

Evaluation:
Final Project: 30%
Daily projects: 20%

Remarks:

Students will be required to have access to a computer in the classroom and at home.

This is an intensive one-week class and students will be required to attend all classes.

The classes will focus on team collaboration and require out-of-class work to produce a team project by the end of the week.

Topic:What is online journalism and what is our role in it?


Description

Opening discussion and talk about online journalism, the emergence of blogs and social software tools that are affecting journalism.

Students will sign up for gmail accounts and set up their personal pages on the class website. Students will take notes online and describe their interests and what they would like to get out of this course.

Students will be divided up into groups (depending on the number of students) based on their interests and will decide on a story that they will collaborate on completing by the end of the course. Team pages will be set up on the site.

Students will report back to the group on their plans.

A review of the tools to be used in the class will be provided.

Class 2    July 15, 2008 18:10-19:40
Topic:More tools and beginning our research


Description

Students will sign up for and prepare to use other tools that will be required for researching and discussing the projects.

Once the tools have been set up, the teams will configure groups and other settings in the tools and work on a workflow for researching and developing their story.

At least one interview will be required which involves all of the team members.

Assignments:Begin coordinating the interview, research the group topic on the web and tag/share bookmarks, have conversations about the topic and websites and master the tools.

Class 3    July 16, 2008 16:30-18:00
Topic:The public and the virtual newsroom


Description

Discuss how the public consumes and participates on the news and how this is impacting traditional journalism.

The following tools will be demonstrated and discussed: Delicious (for bookmarks), a blog (for publishing), Twitter (for micro-blogging), AIM (for collaboration), Flickr (for photography), Flowgrams (for voice annotating photos and websites) and Seesmic (for video conversation).

Status of student projects will be reported and discussed briefly.

Class 4    July 16, 2008 18:10-19:40
Topic:Learn the tools for participating in the media


Description

Students will set up Google Reader (RSS aggregator) and FriendFeed and begin reading blogs and other resources that they have discovered and that we have discussed. Students will register for a Wikipedia account and create a watchlist of relevant articles for their work and possibly edit these pages based on research they are conducting.

Other tools useful for the student projects will be learned and set up.

Students will work in groups discussing projects further and collaborating in research in a "newsroom" fashion.

Topic:Publishing


Description

We will discuss what it means to publish works and view and discuss examples of various forms of publishing. We will discuss the importance of gaining attention from the audience for your works and how to participate in a conversation with them.

Class 6    July 17, 2008 18:10-19:40
Topic:Publishing our works for real


Description

Students will divide up into their groups and work on finalizing their stories and putting together their works for final publishing. Students will be required to complete the final publishing of their works by the end of this class.

The published works will be meant to spark a conversation on the Internet and students will be encouraged to interact with the public.

Class 7    July 18, 2008 16:30-18:00
Topic:Presentations of final reports


Description

Students will describe and show their stories to the group and explain their team structure, workflow and learnings. Students will be encouraged to comment on each others works and provide feedback in the classroom and online.

Final discussion about where we go from here.
