There is no place like a new home for Christmas 2012

"Is there any reason that you could not move into a new home for Christmas next year?" asked Dale Moret, Chairman of the K-M Habitat for Humanity steering committee."No, there is no reason," replied a tearful Ann (Castner) Thompson.  With that exchange Ann and her 3 children learned that they have been selected as the Partner Family for the next local Habitat for Humanity home.  The home will be built on a lot already owned by Habitat for Humanity at 704 6th Street West in Mantorville, and will be completed by the end of 2012.  Extended family and members of the steering committee were on hand to celebrate this new beginning.

K-M Habitat for Humanity is partnering with the Dodge County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to build this house as part of the national "Thrivent Builds Homes"
initiative.  Thrivent Financial for Lutherans nationally  is providing 55% of the financial support for the home, while the local Thrivent and Habitat for Humanity chapters are expected to raise the remaining funds.

Habitat for Humanity is a "hand up," not a "hand out."  Partner families purchase the completed home from Habitat with a no-profit mortgage, and spend up to 500 "sweat equity" hours building their home.  Before moving in, homeowners must complete a series of classes to learn about indoor and outdoor maintenance, budgeting and credit, energy efficiency, fire prevention, being a good neighbor and much more.  Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization committed to eliminating poverty housing by creating
responsible, sustainable homeownership opportunities in partnership with working families.  Funding for the Christian housing ministry of Habitat for Humanity comes primarily from local individuals, churches, and businesses.

The steering committee hopes to break ground in April and spend a busy summer constructing the house for the Thompson family.  Fundraising and volunteer workers will be the key to the success of this project.

More on Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build simple, decent, affordable housing for people in our community who are economically challenged.  Funding for the Habitat ministry comes primarily from local individuals, churches, and business contributions.

KM Build House #1: Thanks to the help of many great volunteers, supporters, and our partner family, in 2010 the Wilson's moved into their new Habitat for Humanity home on Saturday, June 26'th.  This was the result of many enthusiastic volunteers and generous donations of building materials.  The Wilsons will pay back Habitat for the house over 25 years at no interest (Biblical financing), which in turn will help other hard working local families obtain the dream of home ownership!  K-M churches worked together with our community to make this dream a reality.  Click here to see images from the build and dedication of house #1 - the Wilson's new home.
