Gandhi's full name is  Mohandas Kramchand  Gandhi. Around the world he was commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi. He was born in 1869 in Gujarap, India. He had many peaceful solutions for protests against the British even though India was in a crisis, like fasting for a cause of non-violence for five days until opposing leaders promised to stop the on going fight. He attracted many villagers and farmers to join his 240-mile across India to protest the taxing of salt by the British. Gandhi taught many people to oppose British laws. Also, he helped change discrimination of untouchables in India and insisted on gender and religious equality. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse. At his gravesite ''Cow dung lies around the the memorial, and the steps leading to the arch are cracked.'' (Philidelphia Inquirer Jan. 27 1998)
