An Introduction to Modern-day Slavery

Though slavery has changed and survived through so many centuries, today's slavery is still very similar to what it was only a few centuries ago. In both poor and developing nations, forced labor, debt bondage and other forms of slavery are still in existence.

It's happening all around the world - in China, Africa, India, and Brazil.  And it's not people living like slaves. It's people held captive, bought, sold, brutalized, and having to work for little or no pay. Sometimes, the pay really is only having their life spared.

It's also not just adults and teens in slavery - it's children, too.  Most people get lured into slavery with bribes, especially in India.  Imagine a chance to support your family with a lot of money for only minimum work - a lot of people with little income would take the chance immediately.  Then, they are locked into tiny rooms with no windows, and get pennies or usually nothing a day.  They cannot escape for fear of being shot or beaten.
