February Yiddish Culture Festival Was Fabulous!
Full holiday weekend of Yiddish culture and Klezmer
music
Concerts, singing, dancing, music, Yiddish conversation and

Like KlezKamp and KlezKanada, but closer to home!
We are pleased that
the Festival
was a fabulous success, with a total attendance of 450! The Etz Chayim
facility was bursting with happy people from our community at all the
events -- concerts, workshops and special programs. There was much
excitement during the three days, as people learned and studied
together, sang, danced and played music, made new friends, heard two
incredible concerts, and had an overall great and memorable experience.

KlezCalifornia Yiddish Culture Festival

Join us for the Yiddish Culture Festival at Congregation Etz Chayim ( 4161 Alma St, Palo Alto CA | map) over Presidents' Day Weekend. It's all shaping up to be a terrific mini-vacation for
all of us this winter.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- Saturday evening concert and dance party
with terrific music by Festival teachers Stu Brotman (bass), Christian
Dawid (clarinet), Josh Horowitz (accordion), Frank London (trumpet), Cookie Segelstein (violin), with singer Eleanor Reissa and other special guests. The world-renowned Steve Weintraub will
lead dancing after the concert.

Sunday evening South Bay premiere of The Klezmer Shul, an original composition by klezmer trio Veretski Pass (Cookie
Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz, and Stu Brotman). This new instrumental
suite, inspired by synagogue services, was composed under the auspices of
KlezCalifornia. The concert performance will be followed by discussion, and then
Yiddish dancing.
- Fifty-nine workshops over three days, including:
- Klezmer technique, ensembles, master classes, klezmer
theory (with Joshua Horowitz), composing and improvising (with Frank
London), beginners' read-along from simplified klezmer scores.
- Opportunities to study with Frank London, trumpeter, bandleader and composer best known
as a member of The
Klezmatics. Frank is featured on over 200 CDs. His interests include traditional klezmer, jazz and avant garde, hazones, and zmires.
- Master class for singers and two-day acting workshop with New York-based singer, writer, director and actor Eleanor
Reissa, who starred in the title role of Yentl,has toured the country with her one-woman show, "Hip Heymish and Hot."
- Yiddish expressions for the twenty-first century with popular Bay Area Yiddish
 teachers Jon Levitow and Harvey Varga. If you already know all
these expressions, join the Yiddish-speaker tables at lunch on Sunday
and Monday.
- Jewish interaction with neighboring cultures: Klezmer/Balkan/Roma Connections with Christian Dawid and Peter Jaques, The Shared Melodic Pepertory of the Yiddish and Greek Worlds with Martin Schwartz, and
Yiddish and Klezmer Meet American Music with Howard
Freedman.
- Yiddish in the Hasidic World, with Zachary Baker and Ken Blady.
- Yiddish Love Songs (for Valentine's Day), with Sharon Bernstein,
and Songs of the Jewish Labor Movement from both sides of the ocean,
with Mark Levy.
