News and Race Reports

The Official Launch of RiceRacing.Org

posted ‎‎May 26, 2009 9:22 PM‎‎ by Nick Flyger   [ updated ‎‎May 27, 2009 6:39 PM‎‎ ]

Over the past 2 months we have tried and tested a few things to see how many people are keen to have regular races. The response has been great and we are now ready to take the next step so without further ado here are some important announcements...

- We have our own Domain name! You can now stay up to date on Rice Racing via the new web address www.riceracing.org Hopefully it will now be easier for you to tell your friends how to find us.

- In order to prevent cross posting to other local mailing lists please take the time to Join the E-Mailing List and/or the FaceBook group "Rice Racing - Get Cooked on a Bike!". From now on all announcements will be through these two sources only.

- I have updated the race course page on the website to include better maps and instructions.

- I have settled on using three circuits. Two are south and east of the city but within easy driving or riding. I am working on a circuit north of the city to accommodate people living up that way.

***NEXT RACE***

- For those not going to XTERRA we will have a race at the Putrajaya Circuit on Saturday the 6th of June. Start at the usual time of 8am.

***TEAM TIME TRIAL 21st JUNE***
- We have purchased race numbers and are now ready to begin registrations and grading. So at 8am on Sunday June the 21st we will have a Team Time Trial that will also serve as a registration and grading day.
  • We will race on the 56 km E21 (Kajang-Mantin-Kajang) Circuit (directions HERE)
  • Teams of four (at least three must finish together)
  • Two categories: Normal Bicycles or Bicycles with Aerodynamic Components
  • Entry Fee is 10 RM which covers the cost of race numbers. You keep those numbers for the rest of the race races this year
  • Based on your teams time we will grade everyone so that at future races will have graded bunches or handicapped starts
  • If you cannot find a team or your team is short of members register anyway and I will try to match you with other people looking for teammates
  • Several days prior to the TTT your team will be given a start time. Please ensure you are on the line and ready to start at exactly this time.
  • You can register your team HERE

Change in Race Calender

To avoid clashing with Xterra we will have a normal bunch race at 8am on Saturday June the 6th at the Putrajaya Circuit (where we held the first to races).

The Team Time Trial will be Sunday June the 14th. Please see the latest post on the website for details.

Next Race: Sunday 8am, 17th May at the Jelebu Circuit

posted ‎‎May 9, 2009 8:26 PM‎‎ by Nick Flyger

This circuit is approximately a 30 km loop with two hills that have you climbing around 250 m per lap. The road is a nice quiet loop through several Kumpungs. We will be doing between 60 and 90 km depending on numbers and who shows up.

To get there from KL, drive over Genting Peraz via Hulu Langat (Pekan Batu 14). The start is at the intersection at the base of the hill on the other side of Genting Peraz about 5 km before Titi.

For a map (or GPS users) copy and paste the following coordinates into the search bar for Google maps (http://maps.google.com/) and then press "Search Maps": N3.082861 E102.041061

On another note the first race in June will be a 4 person Team Time Trial near Kajang. We will have two grades: A Grade will ride about 90km and B Grade 45km. We will have two classes within each grade 'Aero Components Allowed' and 'Standard Racing Bikes Only'. Start finding some teammates now!

Race Report: 26 April, Putrajaya

posted ‎‎Apr 27, 2009 9:09 PM‎‎ by Nick Flyger   [ updated ‎‎Apr 27, 2009 10:12 PM‎‎ ]

Another great turn out with 40 riders making the Sunday start. Now that the riders knew what to expect there was a call to
lengthen the race. As a result we raced over 4 laps (~70 km), with the first lap neutralized. Once the warm up was out of the way
we duly got down to action. Unlike last week white line fever didn't grip the peleton right from the start and we manged to
sedately ride through the start. When the pace slowed to under 30 km/h the first attack came and it didn't let up for the next
25 km until a break of around 6 riders managed to escape.

Meanwhile back in the groupetto a few riders ruefully congregated at the back realizing that they had failed to chase the one
break that was going to stick. I few more half-hearted chases went in but it became clear they were racing for minor places and
pride.

Up front the leading group were pulling a steady 43 km/hr and working well together. Towards the end of the 4th lap the tactical
riding started as riders positioned themselves for the final sprint. One attack went up the final rise to the interchange in but it was
far to early splitting the group and leaving Isma and Lim to duel it out over the final 800 m. Lim held wheel Isma's wheel until final
moment when he rolled over the top and took a comfortable win from last weeks race winner. Patrick dug deep to easily take thrid
place from the remaining riders.

The next race will be May 17th at the Jelebu loop located over Genting Perez on the way to Titi. The reason for the break in racing is
that many people are on the Tour of Egat and Interstate Ride. For this ride we hope to have registration and race numbers. I will
confirm the details in the week before the race.

Race Report: 18 April - Putrajaya

posted ‎‎Apr 27, 2009 8:59 PM‎‎ by Nick Flyger   [ updated ‎‎Apr 27, 2009 8:47 PM‎‎ ]

What a great start to racing with over 50 cyclists braving the hot temperatures and dusty start area turning up to race. In fact there were about 3 times as many people as my expectations! Things got off to a sedate start with a neutral lap so everyone could learn the course route. The two interchanges provided a nice grade that was going to put the Peloton under pressure and a tricky cross-wind was present in the middle of the loop.

Just as the bunch finished the neutral lap a couple of cyclists got 'white line fever' and decided to start racing early. This left the group strung out and a few people at the back were caught out, including the 'commissaire' who was expecting the race to start after the hill. The two false starters were punished by going the wrong way at the very first turn and ending up somewhere near Salak Tinggi.

Right from the start the P2K riders signaled their intentions by controlling the front and sending a chaser after a lone rider up the road. Those two were left to dangle for 5 km until a dangerous chase group formed sparking the Peleton into life. From there on a number of attacks went in but nothing really stuck. Another lone P2K rider got away just before the start of the second lap but never looked dangerous as the other riders reacted to the blocking from his teammates.

In the final few kilometers there was questions raised about the tactics of some riders looking to chase lorries for a draft (not allowed!) but the race ended in a bunch finish with Isma taking it by a bike length from Simon Lim, Simon Cross and another rider who I didn't catch (sorry).

If anyone has any pictures please email klcycleraces@gmail.com with a couple of good ones from the start and finish so I can post them with the race report.

Also I would like to thank the following... Terry for being the first to reply to the survey and really motivating me to get this off the ground with his support. TSB aka Big Easy aka Kharis for being my mentor and providing a chase car for the final few laps on Saturday. Don for giving good advice on race locations and timing. The biggest thanks of all goes to Mei Ling and her friends for volanteering to come down and time the finish.

Next Race: Sunday 8am, April 26 at Putrajaya Persiaran Timur Circuit.

posted ‎‎Apr 19, 2009 8:40 PM‎‎ by Nick Flyger   [ updated ‎‎Apr 23, 2009 9:48 PM‎‎ ]

After a great first race I am keen to keep the momentum rolling. Therefore this weekend I will organize a second race in the same location. After feedback from last Saturday this race will start at 8 am on Sunday (please be there by 7:45 am). Should we have another good turn out we will start two bunches - A Grade (3 laps) and B Grade (2 laps).

To find your way to the start copy and paste the following coordinates into the search bar for Google maps (http://maps.google.com/) and then press "Search Maps":

Start/Finish: N2 53.688 E101 39.126

I realize that having a race so soon after the last one might be too much for some but I hope you can come out. The third race will be mid May owing to the Tour of Egat in Thailand, PCC interstate ride and races in Johor over the first few weeks of May.

From mid May onwards I plan to organize a race on the 1st and 3rd Saturday or Sunday of each month unless it clashes with a significant event. We will also expand the races to several other locations to keep things interesting and varied.

Some other initiatives I am looking at including are...
  • A similar concept to a yellow jersey that the winner of the last race displays so they are recognizable in the Peloton.
  • A better website with a new identity (thanks to Razli for the ideas and logo) and multi-lingual.
  • Maybe a small trophy or sponsored goodies for the top three finishers in each grade.
  • Alternating races each month between the north and south of KL.
  • Having a 5 RM registration fee for the entire year so that I can make race numbers and keep track of everyone for grading and handicap purposes.

You can read the race report and view the pictures from last week at http://sites.google.com/site/klcycleracing/race-reports.

First Race - Saturday 18 April, meet 8:30 am at the Putrajaya Persiaran Timur Circuit

posted ‎‎Apr 13, 2009 4:00 AM‎‎ by Nick Flyger   [ updated ‎‎Apr 13, 2009 4:11 AM‎‎ ]

Hi all,

The first race will be this Saturday at the Putrajaya Persiaran Timur Circuit. Check out the Race Courses page for a map and instruction on how to get there. Racing starts 9am. Please be at the start/finish by 8:30 so you can sign on, get assigned to a grade and I can quickly brief everyone on race rules and etiquette. I expect racing to be over in 60 min, some of us will probably carry on for a long ride in the Sepang area.

Depending on numbers and motivation we will have 3 categories...

Cat 1 (Open) - 3 Laps
Cat 2 (Vets/Women) - 2 Laps
Cat 3 (Social/Novice) - 1 or 2 Laps

Look forward to seeing you there. If we have a good turn out it will keep me motivated to organize more races.

One thing that worries me...

posted ‎‎Apr 13, 2009 3:43 AM‎‎ by Nick Flyger   [ updated ‎‎Apr 13, 2009 3:47 AM‎‎ ]

One thing that worries me is that in NZ several race organizers have been prosecuted for negligence when cyclists were killed or injured in their races. One solution we came up with in NZ was informal racing. No marshals are present, no race fee is paid and you must conform to the normal road rules. This is how I intend to start out but I would appreciate if anyone in the know can give me the low down about laws in Malaysia covering this type of thing. I would much prefer to not end up on the wring side of the prison fence at Titi watching you all ride the Broga loop!

Results from the Online Survey

posted ‎‎Apr 13, 2009 3:31 AM‎‎ by Nick Flyger

The results of my survey were fairly encouraging. I have 37 respondents so far with out advertising on the way2ride.com forum. Does anyone know the moderators? They haven't approved my registration so I cant post there yet.

- The results indicated that 50% of people would race once a month and the other 50% at least twice.
- The great majority want a social/novice grade and a open/vets grade. Many comments indicated they did not want to race against elite MSN/state athletes.
- Everyone indicated they would pay a small fee <20 RM or offer to marshal every now and then in return for no race fee.
- Most people were happy with any style of racing. The biggest turn-offs were track (35%), handicapped races (30%) and KoM/Stage Races/TT (15-20%).
- Saturday or Sunday morning are the preferred times with Sunday having the slight edge.
- Few people would race during the major Muslim, Christian or Chinese Holidays.
- A number of excellent racing venues were suggested. I have chosen the ones I think are the best/safest/easiest to marshal. Because I am not familiar with riding in the north west and west of KL my courses are centered in the south, west and north. If I find a better course over that way then I would add it. Possibly there might be scope for 2-4km criterium courses in the Kota Damansara and Sg Buloh areas.
