Writing

Our goal for this year is to have every child writing at least one complete sentence.  This includes a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between their words, a few simple sight words spelled correctly, and punctuation at the end of that sentence.

Reminder:

When your child is writing please encourage him/her to use his/her "own brain."  Help them listen to the letter sounds in words and choose the letter sounds that he/she hears.  You can help your child hear more sounds by saying the word slowly and stretching it out, but please do not give your child the spelling of words.  Decoding words independently is one of the most important skills learned in Kindergarten and your child will be able to do it much more independently if you stear clear of always giving him/her the spelling to new words.  Also, remind your child to use his/hersight words throughout his/her writing.  Using words that he/she knows will help him/her to become more confident in his/her writing!

Writer's Checklist

___ My sentence starts with a capital letter.

___ I used finger spaces between my words.

___ I used a punctuation point at the end of my sentence.

___ I re-read my sentence to check that it makes sense.

Please use the writer's checklist each time your child composes a sentence.  This will help your child learn to edit his/her own work!
