DEADLINES EXTENDED TO: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28TH, 2009 @ MIDNIGHT This will be your final chance to register your child(ren) for the Safe Arrival Program and/or School Directory. LORD KITCHENER SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM AND STUDENT DIRECTORY 1) Register their child(ren) in the Safe Arrival Program and/or 2) Register their child(ren) for inclusion in the PAC-published Student Directory that will be distributed to every family at Lord Kitchener, and/or to 3) Sign up to volunteer for the Safe Arrival Program. Overview As per the notice that was sent home to each family, the Vancouver School Board's concerns regarding privacy and confidentiality means that the Kitchener office will no longer supply us with family contact information to run our parent-driven and -run Safe Arrival Program. As well, the office will no longer publish the Student Directory that we have all come to rely on for arranging social activities, carpooling and for finding out what homework our child has missed, etc. This has necessitated that PAC formally ask parents if they wish to register their child(ren) in the Safe Arrival Program and the Student Directory. I am also using this webpage to solicit for Safe Arrival volunteers. 1. Safe Arrival Program ☏ 604-713-5844 (In effect Monday, October 26th, 2009 to Tuesday, June 29th, 2010) Safe Arrival is an important program that ensures that at the start of each school day, every student enrolled in the Safe Arrival Program is accounted for. Briefly, attendance is taken in each classroom with the teacher making notations if a child is late, absent (teacher has advance knowledge of absence) or unknown (indicating that a child is not in classroom at the time attendance is being taken and that the Safe Arrival Office should follow-up on the child's whereabouts). This is a voluntary program and non-registration will indicate non-participation. Each child must be registered separately, and it literally takes just a few minutes to do so. To register your child for the Safe Arrival Program, please click on "Safe Arrival Registration" on the side bar at top of page or click on this link http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dGo2dGFOM21DejJydE5hVkoxZ3ZPQ1E6MA
Deadline: Friday, October 16th, 2009. Now that you've registered your child(ren) for Safe Arrival, please follow the procedures below if your child will be late or absent from school (even if you've given a note to the child's teacher, we ask that you still contact Safe Arrival): Phone the Safe Arrival Office at ☏ 604-713-5844 and state the following clearly and slowly:
2. Safe Arrival Volunteer Sign-Up Working in the Safe Arrival Office is a wonderful way to get to know the school staff, the school itself, and students (albeit, those who are late and/or absent). As a volunteer, you will be asked to select one day of the week in a given month that you would like to work eg. if you choose Mondays, then you would work every Monday of that particular month. You would need to be in the Safe Arrival Office by 8:55/9:00am the morning of your shift, and would stay until all the students are accounted for. If there aren't many absences or "unaccounted" for students, you could finish as early as 9:30am; if it's a more challenging day, it could go as late as 10:30am. If you cannot make a shift, it will be your responsibility to arrange for a substitute volunteer from a list I will provide you. On the left side bar of the top of this page, you can go to "Daily Procedures for Safe Arrival Volunteers", to see what exactly you will do during your shift. Two days a week our volunteers may also be asked to help the "Walking Wheeling Wednesday Program" by inserting a one-sheeter in the teachers' attendance folders and another day, removing, from the same folder, each class' "Walking Wheeling Wednesdays" tally sheets. It would be a simple job, and one that gives you a connection to another great Kitchener program. I should advise anyone who takes a Monday shift that sometimes that shift can go until 11am as assemblies are often held Monday mornings, which means that in the rush to get classes to the gym, attendance folders may not be completed until after the assembly ends. I am frequently asked whether you can bring a little one to Safe Arrival. Yes, but I know it also depends on the child. I brought my then preschooler for two years, and I also brought my youngest child for five years (one year during which I had both my preschooler and my newborn!). I have a box of pencil crayons and a little notebook in the room that little ones can draw and write in. Please also feel free to bring toys, books and snacks for them. But I should caution you that when you have to follow-up on "unaccounted for" students, it necessitates taking your little ones with up, up and down stairs, out to the frame building, etc. We have just over 7 months to cover, and preferably 5 different volunteers per month, so it does require a lot of help. Please consider signing up by clicking on the "Safe Arrival Volunteer Sign-up" on the side bar at the top of the page, or by clicking on this link http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dGpzY3ZiS0owUTNfUEZNRGpJclVLSGc6MA Deadline: Friday, October 16th, 2009 so I can work out a schedule ASAP. However, I will be accepting and training volunteers throughout the year, so late registrations are accepted; just send me a quick email to inform me you've registered. Thanks!
3. Student Directory Registration If you would like your child(ren) to be included in the Student Directory, one copy of which would be distributed to every family at Kitchener, please click on "Student Directory Registration" on the side bar at the top of page or register at http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dDI5Rl9PY1AzOWRkSDFGN0puZm5fbXc6MA Deadline: Friday, October 16th, 2009. This is a completely new data collection system for us, so please bear with us as we work through this together. Thank you for your interest, and we wish you all a wonderful school year. And please do consider signing up as a Safe Arrival volunteer. Warmly, Christina Yan-LeeSafe Arrival Coordinator chrisyanlee8@gmail.com
