High Energy Physics:

Fermilab’s Tevatron Collider is used to accelerate and collide protons and antiprotons very close to the speed of light and analyze the data to understand the universe through particle physics concepts. Louisiana Tech University is a part of the Fermilab’s DØ Collaboration which works with the data recorded by the DØ detector of the Tevatron. All the research responsibilities listed below also amounts to work done as a Member of the DØ Collaboration.

  • Defining a new, triple differential observable to study the transition from soft QCD processes to hard QCD processes
  • Azimuthal angular separation pertaining to collision events with two or more jets is chosen as the differential parameter
  • First measurement of rapidity dependence in studying additional radiation produced in collisions
  • Also measured transverse momentum dependence; previous work noted the dependence but no quantification was made earlier
  • Found that the dijet azimuthal decorrelations decrease with increase in jet transverse momentum and increase with increase in jet rapidity
  • Selecting relevant data for the analysis such that all well-defined regions of the detector are covered, making this study
  • Correcting the data for detector effects using Monte Carlo simulations
  • Results compare well to Next-to-Leading Order theory predictions in central and intermediate jet rapidity regions and when azimuthal separation is not large

Tools used: C++/ROOT programming

Bionanotechnology Laboratory, LaTech

Graduate Research Assistant

Protein engineering: Research was aimed at developing biodegradable wound dressings.

  • Designing and synthesizing RGD-containing, 32-meric polypeptides in solid-phase

Biomedical Sensors/Imaging: Involved in multiple projects in the lab.

  • Designing Fabry-Pérot Micro Interferometer (FPMI) for micromanufacturing with silicon substrate
  • Studied polymeric materials that can serve as transparent, flexible substrates for surface-localizable imaging array
  • Studying surface micromachining and bulk micromachining techniques for manufacture of FPMI array
  • Developing an etchant to selectively etch GeO2-containing silica core material of 0.25-mm thick imaging fibre guide which has F-containing silica cladding
  • LbL assembly of Poly DoDecyl Acrylate and Poly Styrene Sulphonate (PDDA-PSS) on to the etched optical fibre bundle
  • Loading dye-coated nanoparticles on coated optical fibre bundle, to prepare biomedical imaging sensors
  • Designing a holder for the chuck that holds the optical fibre bundle
  • Selective patterning of the imaging fibre guide

Techniques and tools used: Wet etching, LbL assembly, AutoCAD, QCM, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Roughness Surface Tester (RST), sonication, fluorescence microscopy, image processing, MATLAB
