Ann van Beukelen and Penny Webster recognised for services to swimmingTwo of Kingston Royals’ well-known faces were presented awards this year for the contributions they have made to swimming. Ann van Beukelen was awarded The London Federation of Sport Queen’s Jubilee Award for 40 years of service. Meanwhile Penny was recognised for 30 years of service. Richard Robbins, KRSC Chairman said: “Ann and Penny do a huge amount not only for Kingston Royals but for swimming in general. They both thoroughly deserve this recognition and we look forward to seeing them both around the pool for many, many years to come.” Ann receives her award from ex Sports Minister, Kate Hoey, MP Alex Panayides cleans up at Great Swim series17 October 2011: Alex Panayides, 17 yrs, finished the 2011 open water season this month having won four of the five British Gas Great Swim series (outside the elite swimmers). She took first place at the Great Manchester, Great East, Great London and Great Scottish swims. Unfortunately she missed out on the Great North because she was representing Cyprus at an international event. The Great Swim events are currently being shown on a Sunday morning on Channel 4, a mark of the enormous growth in interest in open water swimming. They are a series of one or two mile swims that attract thousands of swimmers but also a top class elite field including world champions such as Kerri-Anne Payne and Thomas Lurz. In addition to the Great Swims, this year also saw Alex compete in the LEN (Ligue Europeenne de Natation/European Swimming League) open water championships for the first time. The league consists of a series of 5k and 10k swims over the season and Alex ended the 2011 season in seventh place. Dulcie EverittDulcie Everitt has been selected to represent Surrey County in the National County Team Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on 16th October. Congratulations to Dulcie and we wish her the best of luck. Contact . . . | Christmas Cracker, 23rd DecemberThank you to all who supported the KRSC Christmas Cracker Gala on 23rd December. Over 80 swimmers turned up to compete in races that involved a bit of brain power, some ingenuity, a modicum of swimming, oh and the odd touch of old-fashioned cheating! (Yes, we did notice …) The proceeds for the event were split to provide a donation to the Tumaini Childrens Home in Mombasa and raise valuable funds for future club events. Swimmers and supporters (of which there were many) enjoyed pizza and prize-giving at the New Malden Centre after the event. Well done to Alex Panayides’ team “Alex’s Angelfish” (pictured below) who were the winning team. But honorable mentions must go to all the others: Dan’s Dragonfish Shakira’s Swordfish Chris's Clownfish Dulcie's Dartfish Theo's Tigerfish Kingston Royals swimmers in the running for Olympics 2012Following her fantastic open water season this summer, Alex Panayides, 17, has been selected for the Olympic open water trials to represent Cyprus. Alex has been part of the nationals squad at Kingston for several years and over the last couple of years has been increasingly impressive in the open water. Meanwhile Vanessa Raw, 27, who has been training with the club’s national squad for the last few months, is in contention for a place on the GB triathlon team following an emphatic victory in the Eilat ITU Triathlon European Cup in Israel on 29th October. We wish them both all the best of luck.

Alongside her win, another Kingston Royals swimmer, George Robbins, 13 yrs, picked up first place in the half mile race in a time of 10 minutes 33 seconds while his sister, Eve Robbins, 15 yrs, came second. The Great East is the second in the British Gas Great Swim series and attracted over 3,000 swimmers. Kingston Royals by Bill Sweetenham - April 2011This week I have had the pleasure to work with many swimmers of the club and the coaching staff. I enjoyed the experience and was greatly impressed with the attitude of the swimmers and their skill levels. Their training discipline I found excellent. The coaches John and Di briefed me the day before I worked on deck with the group, and spoke to me with a great sense of pride in their athletes and coaching groups. It became evident and very obvious during my coaching of the club swimmers that they too also enjoyed the challenge of maximizing their potential by their attention to detail and commitment to dedicated and applied hard training. The athletes displayed the same pride in their practice as I heard from John and Di the day before. I can assure the athletes that if they practice every workout (minimum 7 sessions a week) with the same sense of pride, attitude and commitment that I clearly witnessed during my time with the club, then optimal performances as an individual and as a team will soon follow. In order to maximize individual potential it is frequency of exposure that initiates adaptation to a given and desired stimulus that creates a successful outcome. Then comes volume and intensity. It is important to understand that speed and fitness can be added to efficiency but rarely if ever, does the opposite apply. This means counting stroke lengths, breathing patterns adding times achieved and number of strokes together, leaving on time, getting your own repeat times and measuring your streamlining and speed etc are all important aspects of performance in practice, that creates the self belief that these same skills can be repeated with accuracy and precision under pressure in competition. Swimmers, Coaches, John, Di and all, Parents, and Club Officials can all be pleased with your efforts and attitudes. Once again I enjoyed my visit to Kingston and the opportunity to work with fantastic groups of young swimmers and dedicated coaches. An identified area of improvement is self belief and perhaps a little more regular attendance. One cannot be achieved without the other. Very impressive was the number of young women aged between 14 and 18 who attended and were obviously committed to their sport, club and self improvement. Congratulations to all, with a special mention to Will Clark for his outstanding 6 second improvement in the 200 Free! Bill Sweetenham.
