Harriman’s Walnut Hill Elementary School held a Career Day event on Monday May 18. Donna Savage and BJ Gillum were invited to attend and represent the Writer’s Club. We were glad to support the school system’s Writing Initiative. We spoke to 4th and 5th grade classes about writing and found them to be curious and attentive. Afterward, we met with school officials and discussed the program and ways our club might be able to support the initiative and their young authors. This is a chance to ‘give back’ to the community and perhaps, inspire and guide a young author to literary success.

Five members of our club attended the Polk Salad Festival in Harriman’s Riverfront Park. Despite rain and blustery weather spirits were high and attendance was good. Our books did not like the moisture and we were challenged to deep them dry. John Wilson was handsome in his ‘War Between the States’ Suttler outfit. Ever wonder how the pioneers ‘kept their powder dry’ in such conditions? Fawn Smith had her new book of poetry - Musings, Poetry and prose by Fawn and was dressed in medieval hooded cloak and dress. We soon discovered the obvious; that this was not the proper venue for books. But we owe a big “Thank You!” to David Web and the sponsors who kindly let us have a tent and a microphone and helped us in many ways.

Three members attended the Home and Garden show at RCCC and were forced indoors by inclement weather. The small crowd reflected the rainy weather outside. We put the club’s best face forward and hoped for better weather next time.

Group Book Signing in Oak Ridge:

The Methodist Medical Center is currently considering our authors for a special day of book signings in their new facility in Oak Ridge. Susan Hill, manager of volunteer services says it will be in late spring or early summer. We will post the date here when it is established.

Our club’s numbers and enthusiasm continues to grow in good weather and bad, good economy or bad.
We continue to welcome and encourage new members. We are all about you; about encouraging and supporting your efforts.

Meetings: Thursdays at 6pm - Kingston Public Library | info: (865) 354-8658 or bjgillum@planetc.com
