Children's Programs

Need and Purpose

Library programs are designed to help children develop pre-literacy skills and social skills.  Much of the general public does not realize what wonderful, free programs are offered at their library.

This webpage and accompanying video were created to promote children’s programs at Hageman Library in Porter, Indiana.  The video is being shared on the internet through YouTube.  This video could also be linked to the library’s website.  This video could also be shown at a library staff meeting or before Saturday’s Family Films.  Sharing this video at a parent’s meeting or school event may also introduce more people to the library’s programs.

Audience and Setting

This promotional video is aimed at parents and their children who may enjoy and benefit from these library programs.  This video may also be used to introduce library staff members to the programs at the library.  Then staff members will feel more confident when discussing these programs with interested patrons.  Other librarians might be inspired to create their own video to promote their programs!  This video is set at the Hageman Library in Porter, Indiana.

Description

Billy, a library patron and volunteer, and Mr. Baugher, a library employee, introduce viewers to Hageman Library’s Children’s Programs.  They share anecdotes about their experiences during these programs.

Background Information

I decided a puppet show would be a fun way to share information about Hageman’s Children’s Programs.  Using puppets was a good way for me to avoid being on camera!  I decided on the layout of my video and used PowerPoint to organize my information.  I also wrote a script for the puppet show.  I gathered props that are used in each program and captured a still shot for each program.  With the help of my camera man Erik and his video camera, we shot the puppet show.  The most difficult part of this process was transferring the video from the camera to the computer.  Once this process was completed successfully, I used Windows Movie Maker to edit the movie.

Introduction to the Media

This promotional video was created using a digital video camera and digital still camera.  I used Windows Movie Maker to edit the video and add the special effects and transitions. Windows Movie Maker comes with most new Windows software packages and is a user-friendly way to create a video.  Making movies is a great way for children to study different topics in-depth and then share their research with others.
