aka: Crawfish, Crawdad, Mudbug, Redneck Lobster The crawdad is a dead ringer for a micro-lobster. They reside in freshwater streams and rivers. And different species are pretty much ubiquitous around the world. The reason I include them in here is for regional naming of these critters. Crayfish: scientific name, also used in the NE US. Crawdad: mostly used west of the Mississippi. That's what I call them. Crawfish: most common term used in the south. Mudbug: also used in the south Redneck Lobster: a modern and uncommon term but an entertaining one none the less. They are both predators and scavengers. They are also only about 6-8 inches long so as predators they really aren't that fearsome. They are very good to eat. Just boil them like lobster and commence eating. Down Louisiana way they boil them with hot spices and eat them by the (literal) bucketload. The only problem is getting through the armor plating. It takes practice but the results are worth it. |
