This resource discusses the use of a database geared for children and young adults. Kids Search is powered by EBSCOhost and can be located on the Internet at the Inspire website Inspire.IN.gov. Inspire is Indiana’s online library and is free to residents of Indiana.
This database has many great features which makes discovering information even more fun and interesting. The most important feature is the database search itself. This database allows you to search in several neat ways for useful information. The search allows you to choose what type of format the information needs to be in such as newspaper or magazines. Basic topics such as animals and math can be searched as well through a direct link. Check out the "Step by Step Tutorial" link to learn more about this feature. Along with searching articles and such, you can also search for information in the Encyclopedia feature. Just click this option and type in a keyword or phrase and you will marvel at the amount of fantastic information presented. If you have ever been stumped by a word you will love the Dictionary feature built into the database. If a word puzzles you, you won’t have to bother getting a dictionary. You can just click on the Dictionary link and type in the word. You will have an easy to understand definition in seconds. If pictures are your interest, just search the Images feature. You can search for images in various categories like people, places, maps and flags. There is even a sort option within the results that allows you to filter the images by type such as photograph or map. Now I bet you are wondering what you do with all that great information you'll find in Kids Search. Well, that is easy. You can create your own folder to store all the cool things you have gathered. You can create your own user name and password to keep your information protected. No one can get to it but you! This database has many strengths overall. The search options are the best. You can search a detailed search or a visual search. In the visual search, the information is organized in either blocks or columns. You get to choose which format works best for your learning. If you are not sure about what to search for, check out the great Top Searches sidebar and see what other kids are looking into now. With all these great features, it is hard to find anything that this database is lacking. One thing that may help make this database even cooler though is an audio option. An audio option to read the passages or dictionary words would really help children to understand and pronounce new and unfamiliar words accurately. Intended Purpose This database is intended to be used by children and young adults in grades K-8. This source is a great tool to have for any research project or inquiry based lesson in basically any subject matter. Whether it is math or science, the database covers it all. Whenever a question pops in your head and you do not know the answer, don’t let it just fade away. Use this great tool to answer those unique questions and be the leader of your own knowledge.
