KMC TRAVEL CENTRE  Australians now make over 6.8 million overseas trips every year and are intrepid travellers. They travel in increasing numbers to out-of-the-way, sometimes dangerous, places. The Travel Centre at Kialla is a partner in the Charter for Safe Travel – a joint initiative between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australian travel industry. We encourage travellers, especially to third world countries, to visit the smartraveller website and to strongly consider the advice given, ie: • subscribe to the travel advice service; it will cost you nothing and ensure you receive by email any travel advice updates • register your contact details on the smartraveller website, so that consular staff can contact you in an emergency and reassure worried relatives and friends. and • take out travel insurance. The unforeseen can always happen, and medical costs in particular can be crippling, so it's just not worth stinting on insurance. Of course, not all travel is hazardous, but with an uncertain and sometimes very dangerous world scene and an ever-changing environment of health and disease, travellers are advised to seek expert medical advice before planning their trip. Please remember: 1. A trip is not necessarily safe, simply because it has been sold to you. 2. Preparation for your trip may require two months or more of examination, investigation, vaccination, insurance, etc. The needs of a brief holiday are very different from twelve months employment in a third world country, lacking good medical services.
