Khadijah Queen was born near Detroit and raised in Southern California. A visual artist and writer, she holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles and a BA in English from University of Maryland. Her first poetry collection, Conduit, was published in spring 2008 under the Black Goat imprint at Akashic Books. Her work appears or is forthcoming in numerous journals and anthologies including /nor, jubilat, PMS: Poemmemoirstory, In Posse Review, Powder: Writing by Women in the Ranks (Kore Press 2008) and Fire and Ink: A Social Action Anthology (University of Arizona Press 2009). A chapbook, No Isla Encanta (2007), is available from dancing girl press.
Khadijah has led independent workshops, performed her work and exhibited art widely. At Macaulay Honors College (CUNY) in New York City she curates an annual multi-genre/multicultural reading series, Courting Risk. Her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize three times, and she has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Squaw Valley Community of Writers and Idyllwild Summer Poetry. She recently completed a second book of poetry and an avant-garde play, and is at work on a memoir and a third poetry collection.
Her interactive performance Touch, first performed during SPACE: simultaneous public acts of creative expression (an international public arts event conceived by Khadijah Queen & poet Samantha Thornhill in 2010), will be re-presented at Figment NYC in June 2010.
