This guide was written in six weeks by four writers. We each wrote one chapter from scratch and revised older material for the remaining chapters. My primary responsibility was Chapter 8, VPNs. I wrote 100% of the material in that chapter. While the document desperately needs review by a professional editor, I am very proud of what we produced under the tight constraints we faced.
I wrote all the JavaDoc comments in the source code for Jamcracker, Inc's Pivot Path single sign-on management system. The best sample to view is the JavaDoc comments for the com.jamcracker.pivots package. To view the JavaDoc sample, expand the zip file into a folder, open the index.html, and under Packages click on com.jamcracker.pivots.
At SonicWALL, Inc. I helped introduce a form of usability testing for the documentation and setup process for our firewalls and other network security appliances. We would test the out-of-box experience of a novice user. This process led me to redesign the getting started guides. This sample, the TZ 150 Getting Started Guide, is one of the first guides to benefit from this process. I am especially proud of the simple graphics I added on pages 17 and 18 (pages 18 and 19 in the PDF) showing users where to click in a poorly designed screen.
The SonicOS Administrator's Guides were written by a large team of writers. I wrote and edited several sections of this guide. An example of a section I edited is Chapter 12, Configuring PortShield Interfaces. This chapter was written by a co-worker in California. I reviewed the chapter from my home office in New Mexico. The developmental edit required demonstrations from the lead engineer in California using internet conferencing. I edited and re-wrote some of the chapter and coordinated with an off-site graphic artist for the illustrations.
The GMS 4.0 Administrator's Guide was written by a large group of writers and other contributors spread across several states. I was responsible for editing the final document, creating the FrameMaker template and assembling the book, and creating the online help from the FrameMaker document files.
The SolarTrak Prospector is a platform for solar instrumentation that tracks the sun keeping the instrumentation always aimed directly at the sun. I wrote this guide for Precision Solar Technologies over a few weeks during the summer of 2009. This sample best illustrates my ability to work with photographs and create illustrations. I created all the illustrations in the guide and took all the photograps except the four on the cover page. The best example of the illustrations are in the two procedures on pages 18 - 21.
The Optomec Aerosol Jet systems print fine feature electronic, structural and biological patterns onto almost any flat substrate or 3D surface using aerodynamic focusing to precisely deposit materials in lines ranging from 10 microns up to 1 centimeter in width. I wrote this guide in two months. Chapters 3, 4, 11, 12, and 13 are completely new material. The remaining material was assembled from several different guides and updated to the current technology. I wrote this manual in Microsoft Word 2013 with Adobe Acrobat XI Professional. Due to software limitations, I used Microsoft Paint with printscreen screen captures and Word's built-in drawing tools to create and edit all the graphics.Â
