JUNE 2009

I am delighted to announce the roaring success of:

The Lord Of The Rings:
The Musical

It was a spectacular performance, and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you! Not only is it just our second full year as Green Theatre, but our cast is double that of last year, and it was possibly the biggest cast on the KES stage to date!

Special Update:

Sadly, this year is Miss Dunne's last year in Kuwait. She will be moving on to pastures new at University to study Drama. In February 2007, aged 16 and in Year 12, she and Mrs. Dunne organised an inclusive drama group to take place after school on Thursdays, so that special needs and mainstream students could have fun together, just doing drama.

Now, two years on, Green Theatre has flourished to nearly 60 members, with two hit shows under its belt! And there is now also a Junior and an Infant Green Theatre group.

She would like to say a word to you all:

"Hello, my little munchkins!

This year has been an absolute treat for me, despite the ups and downs. What you guys have done over the last year has been truly outstanding. I am so proud to have been involved with such a wonderful group. To have seen the progress of each of you throughout the year; to laugh with you inside and outside Green Theatre; to feel the same joy you did after the final night of Lord of the Rings: I couldn't have asked for more.

I'm going to miss all you of next year. I really am. But knowing that so many of you have such a flair for Drama, and such a passion for the very meaning of this group, I am confident that Green Theatre will continue to thrive. Good luck to all of you.

And don't worry...

...I'll be back!"

What is Green Theatre?
Green Theatre was inspired by Chickenshed's philosophy which has set us on a journey to create an inclusive performing arts environment for students from both our mainstream and special needs departments (LINK). Our initial aim was to provide a venue in which students with special educational needs could be integrated with their peers in the main school. Senior students of the GREEN UNIT created and performed a piece of mime about the issues of bullying, and invited the lower senior school students who watched to join them in an after-school club. Two weeks later, thirty six students were working together, enjoying drama and theatre workshops.

Green Theatre has significantly increased in popularity amongst the students, consisting of 35 students last year, its membership has DOUBLED to nearly 60 in 2008/08! More and more people are showing interest not only in our after-school drama activities, but also our special Saturday Workshops in particular.

Not only that, but as of Academic Year 2008/2009, two new Green Theatre brances were created:

- Junior Green Theatre, and

- Infant Green Theatre

Run by Mrs. Tracey for the younger students of KES.

What do we do?
Every Monday and Thursday after school, the students filter into the Drama Studio, and warm-up as they please. Then we get down to business. After an official 15 minute warm-up (just in case they missed a muscle!), the DRAMA begins. As it is usually a large group, we split up into two or three smaller groups to work, and at the end of each session come together to perform what we have done for everyone else. Then we put our ideas together for the next session!

In the future we will work on development skills in theatre and group participation. We intend to have the students work together and involve them in the creation and rehearsal process of our upcoming projects.

What are we planning?
Next year (2009/2010), we hope that the entusiasm and determination of our staff and students will keep the spirit of Green Theatre going in Miss Dunne's absence. It's up to Mrs. Dunne, Ms. Vas and Mr. Jacob!
